Capital knocks off Skyline on last-second TD; Friday’s football roundup

CAPITAL 27, SKYLINE 24 Capital opted to go for the win at the 1-yard line with 3 seconds left instead of the tie. And Micah Hagler made the move pay off as he plowed in for the game-winning score as time expired. It was Hagler’s second rushing TD of the game for Capital, which fell in a 14-0 hole in the first quarter. Sam Brixey, above, caught a 49-yard TD pass and ran for a 2-yard score for the Eagles, who face Mountain View in next week’s quarterfinals.

MADISON 49, TIMBERLINE 7

Timberline committed four turnovers to fall in Rexburg in the first round of the playoffs for the second year in a row. The Wolves, who are still searching for their first playoff win in school history, scored their only TD on Joey Manibusen’s 24-yard run with 5:09 left in the fourth quarter. Manibusen led Timberline with 87 yards on 12 carries.

LEWISTON 55, MERIDIAN 33

Meridian fell in the first round of the playoffs for the second year in a row to a northern Idaho opponent. Nate Weddle threw two TD passes to Brady Walling and added a fourth-quarter TD run of his own.

MIDDLETON 56, LAKELAND 6

Garrett Gassaway threw three times for 104 yards, all three resulting in touchdowns, as Middleton rolled into a rematch with Bishop Kelly in the quarterfinals. Caleb Harrel added nine carries for 74 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half

GOODING 56, WEISER 16

Gooding took advantage of five turnovers to send Weiser home in the first round of the playoffs. Logan Rowley ran for 76 yards and a TD to lead the Wolverines in the loss.

MELBA 27, WENDELL 23

Christian Chavez returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD, and then he threw a 15-yard TD pass to Devin Edmiston to lead Melba’s fourth-quarter rally as the Mustangs won their first playoff game since 2004. Chavez also ran for 92 yards on 16 carries.

NAMPA CHRISTIAN 19, OROFINO 6

Steve Tiersma completed 13-of-24 passes for 223 yards and three TDs to lead Nampa Christian to a first-round victory. Josh DeJong hauled in five catches for 81 yards for the Trojans, who advance to take on the winner of Saturday’s West Side-North Fremont contest.

WILDER 61, GARDEN VALLEY 6

Caulen Michael ran for 114 yards, threw for 108 and added 148 receiving yards to lead Wilder to a season-ending victory. Michael had a hand in five TDs, three of them passes to Marcus Melton. Wilder's Saul Rodriguez also ran for 166 yards and a TD.

COUNCIL 41, TRI-VALLEY 6

Brett Rosengrant ran for three TDs as the Lumberjacks clinched a playoff berth. Ryan Rosengrant ran for a TD and returned a fumble for a score, and Ryan Rosengrant return a punt 65 yards for six points.
