Prep football recap: Middleton, Mountain View score big playoff wins. BK cruises
The Idaho high school football state playoffs kicked off Friday around the Gem State.
Six Boise-area teams advanced to next week’s quarterfinals, with five Treasure Valley teams still alive at the 6A level, including Timberline and Eagle, which both had first-round byes.

MIDDLETON 64, CAPITAL 34
Jake Perez accounted for 237 of the Vikings’ 429 rushing yards as Middleton rolled to a first-round home win over the Eagles in the 6A state playoffs.
Middleton (7-3) advances to the quarterfinals, where it draws No. 1 seed Timberline (8-1) next Friday at Dona Larsen Park. The Vikings are the only team to beat the Wolves this season, winning 26-12 on Oct. 2 in Middleton.
Perez scored five touchdowns against Capital on runs of 16, 2, 3, 32 and 28 yards. Quarterback Briar Baughman completed 6-of-8 passes for 151 yards with a pair of TD passes to Ryan Lewis.
Brayden Dudley paced Capital, completing 14-of-24 through the air for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Elliot Schrack caught both those TD passes and totaled 166 receiving yards on five catches.
Quincy Clay added two scores for the Eagles (5-5), including a 90-yard kickoff return.
MADISON 17, BOISE 14
With the Brave driving for the go-ahead score, the Bobcats forced a fumble on their home field with 1:17 left to secure a win in the first round of the 6A state playoffs.
Stats were not reported for Boise (4-6).
Madison will travel to Coeur d’Alene next week for a quarterfinal matchup.
MOUNTAIN VIEW 45, HIGHLAND 7
The Mavericks held the Rams to a single score in a home victory in the first round of the 6A state playoffs.
Mountain View (7-3) travels to play defending state champion Rigby in the quarterfinals next week.
Stats were not reported for Mountain View.
BISHOP KELLY 56, EMMETT 14
The Knights opened the 5A state playoffs with a thrashing of the Huskies.
Emmett didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter as Bishop Kelly totaled 364 yards while allowing just 157.
Quarterback Ben Avella went 13-for-16 passing for 193 yards and four touchdowns and also added a rushing TD.
Dom Wolthuis hauled in four passes for 97 yards and three scores, and Ryan Arellano and Charlie Dahl each added a TD on the ground for BK (10-0). Bryce Root and Noah Rulon both had interceptions on defense for the Knights.
Nessen Korell and Griffin Hargitt each scored for Emmett (4-6).
BLACKFOOT 24, VALLIVUE 13
The Broncos ended the Falcons’ season with a road victory in the first round of the 5A state playoffs.
Cade Esplin racked up 206 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries for Blackfoot.
Onix Carson pulled Vallivue within 17-13 with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter, but Blackfoot’s Aaron Arave scored on a 38-yard run with 2:57 remaining to seal the win.
Carson finished with 94 yards on 17 carries, and Sawyer Pool scored the other TD for Vallivue (5-5) on a 21-yard run in the first quarter.
TWIN FALLS 38, RIDGEVUE 0
The Warhawks’ first trip to playoffs was a short one as Ridgevue (6-4) suffered a shutout loss at Twin Falls (8-2). Stats were not reported for either team.
CENTURY 49, COLUMBIA 21
The Wildcats (6-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead. But it was all Century (9-0) the rest of the way as Columbia fell short of the second playoff win in program history.

WEISER 47, TETON 21
The Wolverines (6-4) forced three turnovers and scored touchdowns on five straight possessions Saturday to run away with a 4A first-round victory, advancing to face Homedale next week.
Ty Cobb led a Weiser ground game that ran for 296 yards, putting up 132 yards and two TDs on 17 carries.
The Wolverines didn’t take to the air often but proved ruthlessly efficient when they did. Quarterback Ty Cobb finished 5-for-10 for 61 yards and three TDs. All three scores were caught by Nate Herrera-Garcia, who had three catches for 45 yards.
WALLACE 64, SALMON RIVER 58
The Miners stopped the Savages on fourth-and-9 from the Wallace 24-yard line with 25 seconds left to preserve a victory in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.
Riley Davis scored five rushing touchdowns to lead Salmon River (6-4), which led 58-56 with 3:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. The two teams traded the lead eight times in the second half.
Wallace scored its first playoff win since 2011 thanks to a 17-yard TD run by Cooper Miller with 2:06 left in the game.
