Prep football recap: Eagle pulls away. Owyhee stays perfect. Meridian gets win

Senior running back Noah Burnham was nowhere to be found after Eagle’s football game on Friday night.

Opposing defenses seem to have trouble locating him, too.

The 6A classification’s rushing leader broke open a tie game after three quarters with a pair of touchdowns to ignite the No. 2-ranked Mustangs’ 21-14 victory over Mountain View in a 6A Southern Idaho Conference River Division game in Meridian.

“Nobody really wants to meet contact with Noah,” Eagle quarterback Austin Ramsey said. “It looks like the dude just didn’t even want to try and guard him, and Noah just went straight through him.”

Ramsey was referring to Burnham’s 48-yard touchdown reception with 10:34 left in the fourth quarter that broke a 7-all tie.

The Mustangs were facing second-and-12 from the Mountain View 48-yard line when Burnham left his defender lying on the turf on his way to the go-ahead score.

“Obviously, Noah’s a special cat,” Eagle coach James Cluphf said. “Everyone’s very guarded when it comes to him. I think guys have to be careful, right? So he made a little move and did a great job of getting himself open.”

Burnham then added a 13-yard TD run with 2:04 left in the game for a 21-7 Eagle lead. He totaled 101 yards on 21 carries and also caught four passes for 67 yards. Burnham now has more than 650 rushing yards this season.

Eagle improved to 5-0 this season and 2-0 in division play. The Mustangs are ranked second in the state after a state runner-up finish last season and have now won four in a row against the Mavericks (2-3, 1-1).

“It feels good, but we’re not satisfied,” Eagle defensive back Zayah Wright said. “This is not what we’re shooting for. We’re obviously shooting for that game late in November.”

It was an impossibly tight game through three quarters, as both teams had just two possessions each in the first half and went into the locker room knotted at 7-7.

The stalemate continued in the third before Burnham found the end zone and Eagle’s defense came up with a pair of interceptions.

Wright grabbed the first interception on Mountain View’s opening drive of the fourth quarter. Fellow senior defensive back Colin Duarte came up with the second pick, returning it 47 yards to the Mountain View 18-yard line with 2:15 left to play.

Two plays later, Burnham broke through the Mavericks’ defensive line and extended over the goal line for a 21-7 advantage.

Mountain View tried to rally, scoring on senior quarterback Henry Nelson’s 5-yard run with 58.3 seconds left. The Mavericks then attempted an onside kick, but Eagle recovered and ran out the clock for the victory.

Ramsey finished 20-for-29 through the air for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and senior receiver Cooper Murphy hauled in eight passes for 72 yards. Junior tight end Landon Bult scored Eagle’s first touchdown on a 3-yard pass from Ramsey on the Mustangs’ opening drive of the game.

Nelson went 11-for-21 passing for 148 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Tyler Weaver in the first quarter, to lead Mountain View. Weaver totaled three receptions for 47 yards, and fellow receiver Kian Foy grabbed three passes for 64 yards.

OWYHEE 16, KUNA 14

Senior kicker Corbon Gill nailed a 33-yard field goal with 18 seconds left to send the Storm to a victory over the Kavemen.

Senior Logan Haustveit did damage on both sides of the ball for Owyhee (5-0, 2-0 6A SIC River), scoring a rushing touchdown and grabbing an interception.

Quarterback Colin Foy completed 16-of-27 passing for 143 yards and a TD, Asher Gaudet added 83 rushing yards and 32 receiving yards, and tight end Ryan Brekke hauled in six receptions for 47 yards and a score.

Kuna (1-4, 0-2), which led 14-13 late in the fourth quarter, got rushing touchdowns from Geno Salas and DJ Govenor, while quarterback Lino Senio was 10-for-16 passing for 54 yards but threw a pair of interceptions.

MERIDIAN 21, MIDDLETON 20

LaGary Mitchell scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 2:44 remaining in the game, and kicker Spencer Walker nailed the tie-breaking PAT to give the Warriors their first win of the season.

Quarterback Easton Nungary completed 15-of-25 passes for 242 yards, including the TD toss to Mitchell.

Mitchell led Meridian (1-4, 1-1 6A SIC Foothills) on the ground with 58 yards and one rushing and one receiving TD. Receiver Daysen Boltz collected 168 receiving yards and a TD.

Stats were not reported for Middleton (3-2, 1-1).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN 41, CENTENNIAL 7

The top-ranked Grizzlies (5-0, 2-0 6A SIC Foothills) jumped out to a 41-0 lead at halftime before calling off the dogs.

Rocky Mountain’s Parker Kleinkopf ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter, finishing the night with 96 yards on six carries. And quarterback Kaelan Custer finished 3-for-4 for 92 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown throw to Cody Wheeler.

Centennial (0-5, 0-2) could only muster 173 yards of offense and avoided the shutout with Madden Henderson’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Farris in the fourth quarter.

BISHOP KELLY 22, COLUMBIA 20

The top-ranked Knights led 22-7 at the start of the fourth quarter before the Wildcats attempted to rally with a pair of late touchdowns.

Quarterback Ben Avella challenged Columbia with his legs and through the air, rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown and passing for 168 yards and a score.

Ryan Arellano added a TD run for the Knights (5-0, 2-0 5A SIC), and Dom Wolthuis caught a 16-yard touchdown pass and totaled two receptions for 30 yards.

Quarterback Easton Zickgraf led Columbia (3-2, 1-2) with one rushing and one passing TD, amassing 224 of the Wildcats’ 285 yards.

NAMPA 50, SKYVIEW 28

The Bulldogs broke open a tie game with a 43 combined points in the second and third quarters for their first win of the season.

Nampa running back Kartez Hernandez racked up 210 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries, and quarterback Dom Almaraz went 9-for-17 through the air for 169 yards, including three TD passes to receiver Ryland Rush. Rush racked up 112 yards on four catches.

Nampa (1-5, 1-2 5A SIC) totaled 388 yards to Skyview’s 293. Quarterback Trevan Plew had 50 rushing yards and two TDs, while passing for 198 yards with two interceptions for Skyview (2-3, 1-2).

VALLIVUE 28, EMMETT 21

The Falcons forced three turnovers and rode another big night from Onix Carson, who ran for 193 yards and three touchdowns, to win their third straight game.

Carson spotted Vallivue (3-2, 2-0 5A SIC) a 21-7 lead with 4:53 left in the third quarter with his 52-yard touchdown run. The Falcons held on from there as Sawyer Pool added another 16-yard touchdown run before finishing the night with 91 yards on 19 carries.

Vallivue racked up 298 of its 313 yards on the ground, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Emmett (3-3, 1-2) finished with an identical 313 yards but was haunted by three turnovers.

Nessen Korell continued to carry the Huskies’ offense, racking up 164 total yards and three touchdowns on 14 touches.

WEISER 21, MCCALL-DONNELLY 14

The Wolverines opened their 4A Snake River Valley schedule with their sixth straight victory over the Vandals.

Cole Ingle scored all three touchdowns for Weiser (3-2, 1-0) on the ground, collecting 77 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Klete Cook was 4-for-4 passing for 101 yards.

Stats were not reported for McCall (3-2, 0-1).

HOMEDALE 48, PAYETTE 0

Javid Blewett ran for a pair of touchdowns, grabbed an interception, blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown — all in the first quarter — to lead the No. 3-ranked Trojans (5-0, 1-0) in the 4A SRV opener for both teams.

Homedale’s defense pitched its first shutout of the season, holding Payette (3-2, 0-1) to 112 total yards while forcing two turnovers. Meanwhile, the Trojans scored touchdowns on their first five possessions thanks in part to Blewett, who ran for 75 yards.

Homedale quarterback Xavier Uranga finished 11-for-23 for 244 yards and two TDs. Kade Hall ran for 62 yards and two scores, and Alex Campos hauled in four passes for 119 yards and a TD.
