Prep football recap: Capital routs Borah. BK topples 6A champ. Owyhee rallies late

It took less than four minutes for the Capital football team to score three touchdowns on Borah in the first quarter.

The Lions could barely catch their breath.

The Eagles posted a 55-7 victory over their crosstown rival Friday in 6A Southern Idaho Conference action at Dona Larsen Park, marking the second-most points Capital has scored against Borah since 1988.

“I had no doubt that we were going to bring the energy, and that’s what we did,” Capital coach Kevin Hastin said. “The boys were fired up from the get-go, and we were focusing on staying disciplined and just capitalizing on their mistakes.”

It didn’t take long for the Eagles to sink their claws into the Lions.

Sophomore receiver Quincey Clay took a jet sweep on second-and-8 — just the third play of the game — and went 47 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Then on the fourth play of Borah’s opening drive, the snap went over the punter’s head, and a host of Eagles rallied to the football, with junior defensive lineman Emilio Barajas scooping up the ball in the end zone for a defensive touchdown with 9:21 on the clock in the first quarter.

“It was just a bunch of guys all going to the backfield because we wanted it,” Barajas said. “And then it’s all chaos and commotion from there. Before you know it, I had the ball secured in my hands.”

Borah’s next drive didn’t go any better, with junior quarterback Dayton Wolverton getting picked off by Capital defensive back Josiah Lopez on his second pass attempt of the game.

Two plays later, Capital (2-1) found the end zone once again, scoring on a 21-yard pass from senior quarterback Brayden Dudley to Clay for a 21-0 lead with 8:34 on the clock.

Clay finished the night with seven receptions for 116 yards and three TDs, and he also ran for 68 yards and another score on four touches.

“It feels good. No matter how good they are, no matter what the record is, it’s always going to be a rivalry,” said Clay, who added touchdown catches of 11 and 12 yards in the third quarter. “... The student section’s packed, so we came out hot and did what we had to do to get the win.”

As dangerous as Clay proved, his quarterback was equally impressive. Dudley went 16-for-21 through the air for 256 yards and five touchdowns without an interception.

Capital junior receiver Elliot Schrack caught a 20-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter, and junior tight end Owen Richey hauled in a 31-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Schrack finished with five catches for 65 yards, and Richey had two for 49.

The Eagles led 41-7 at halftime and played with a running clock throughout the fourth quarter because of the 40-point mercy rule.

“We’re an extremely motivated group of guys in our locker room,” Dudley said. “It starts with second period at 8:45 a.m. in the weight room.

“And we’re just amped up to go against one of the best teams in the state next weekend. It is going to be a great challenge for us.”

Capital plays at No. 2 Rocky Mountain at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19.
