Prep football recap: Find out who’s in, who’s out, and who must wait for 6A playoff spot

Bishop Kelly rolled to a 21-6 victory over Emmett on Friday night, clinching the 5A Southern Idaho Conference regular-season title for the third year in a row.

The Knights’ sixth straight victory continues to boost their playoff seeding, but Bishop Kelly won’t know what seed it earned and who it hosts next week until the final MaxPreps rankings come out Sunday.

BK quarterback Ben Avella had a hand in all three of the Knights’ touchdowns, scoring on a 14-yard run in the first quarter and throwing TD passes to Enzi Myricks and Kade Knoll.

Bishop Kelly led 21-0 before the Huskies got on the board with 8:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Avella finished 9-for-16 through the air for 191 yards without an interception. Tylan Kaschmitter paced the Knights (8-1, 6-0) on the ground with 79 yards on 15 carries.

Individual stats for Emmett (6-3, 4-2) were not reported.

CAPITAL 32, BORAH 22

The Eagles (3-6) extended their season with an upset win over the rival Lions, earning the 6A SIC’s sixth and final automatic berth to the state playoffs behind a big night from Marcellus Clay.

The senior running back racked up 119 yards and three TDs on the ground, and he caught five passes for 67 yards and another score. Clay also grabbed an interception on defense.

Capital travels to Madison for next week’s first-round playoff game.

Because of the loss, Borah (5-4) must wait until Sunday to see if finished with a high enough MaxPreps ranking for one of two at-large playoff berths. Individual stats for the Lions were not reported.

The Vikings locked up the 6A SIC’s No. 3 seed thanks to a second-half shutout of the Mavericks.

Middleton (5-4) led 3-0 in the first quarter after a 28-yard field goal from Tyler Robinson, but fell behind 14-3 at the half.

Drew Holman scored both of the Vikings’ touchdowns in the second half, totaling 148 yards on 18 carries. Middleton will host a first-round game next week against the No. 11 seed, which will be determined by the final MaxPreps rankings Sunday.

KUNA 24, MERIDIAN 13

The Kavemen assured themselves a state playoff spot and ended the Warriors’ playoff hopes.

Kuna (4-5) trailed 13-10 at the break, but pitched a shutout in the second half to lock up the 6A SIC’s No. 5 seed.

LaGary Mitchell scored both touchdowns for Meridian (3-6) on runs of 1 and 5 yards. Quarterback Zeke Martinez was 12-for-21 passing for 155 yards.

Individual stats were not reported for Kuna. The Kavemen draw Timberline in the first round next week at Dona Larsen Park.

TIMBERLINE 36, OWYHEE 35, OT

The Wolves clinched their first playoff berth since 2020 in dramatic fashion when Timberline opted to go for a do-or-die, two-point conversion in overtime. Owyhee shut down quarterback Jack Brant’s first option, but he scrambled to his right and weaved his way into the end zone for the decisive score Thursday at Dona Larsen Park.

Timberline (6-3) took a 28-14 lead in the third quarter when Hudson Lewis scored a pair of defensive touchdowns. First, he timed the snap perfectly on a blitz and picked off a pitch to the running back, returning it 63 yards to the end zone. He then added a 57-yard, pick-six interception moments later.

Owyhee (5-3) rallied to force overtime with Cody Freed and Asher Gaudet’s touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, and the Storm took the early lead in overtime when quarterback Kole Frogley ran for a 9-yard score. But the Storm never saw the ball again.

Brant finished 12-for-21 for 127 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for two scores. Brody Engroff led the Wolves on the ground with 15 carries for 63 yards, and Hudson O’Kelley had four catches for 51 yards and a TD.

Frogley went 13-for-16 for 199 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 45 yards and another score. The Storm played without head coach Jason Burton, whom the state suspended for the rest of the season for using an ineligible player earlier this month.

Owyhee is not eliminated from the playoffs yet. It must wait until Sunday to see if its final MaxPreps ranking is high enough to earn it one of two at-large berths.

Timberline will host Kuna in the first round next week at Dona Larsen Park.

SKYVIEW 21, RIDGEVUE 0

Mason Krahn and Henry Downey combined for 185 yards on the ground as the Hawks (2-7, 2-4) shutout the Warhawks (2-6, 0-6) in 5A SIC play.

Krahn totaled 125 yards on 22 carries, and Downey had 60 yards and two touchdowns while also passing for 125 yards and another score.

With the win, Vallivue (6-2, 5-1) earned a state playoff berth and the right to host a first-round game.

Xander Gray caught two passes — both for touchdowns — and finished with a team-best 61 receiving yards.
