Prep football recap: Mtn View bounces back. Centennial wins in 2 OT. Skyview upsets Emmett

Borah’s quest to start a high school football season 5-0 for the first time since 1995 came to a grinding halt Friday night at Dona Larsen Park, while Mountain View’s season got back on track.

Needing a win to make sure it did not slip further down the 5A SIC River Division standings, Mountain View (3-1, 1-1) scored touchdowns on four straight drives to start the second half and roll to a 42-21 win. The victory in a game that was tied 14-14 at halftime allowed the Mavericks to forget about last week’s loss in their division opener to Owyhee.

“It’s kind of been up and down emotionally a little bit, but we just went back to work and challenged the guys to get better, execute a little better,” Mountain View coach Brian Compton said. “We tried a few different things tonight ... especially the second half.”

The Mavericks’ near-perfect second half was led by senior quarterback Justin McGee, who threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns while completing 16-of-21 passes. McGee also ran for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Overall, it was offense by committee for Mountain View, with McGee throwing to eight different receivers. Senior tight end Cass Nelson was the best of the bunch, picking up 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns from 36 and 37 yards out.

Mountain View finished the game with 534 total yards of offense, compared to just 296 for Borah.

Compton said the outburst of offensive firepower in the second half came from a couple of adjustments in the option game.

“We did a nice job, I thought, complementing our run game by hooking up some passes,” Compton said. “We had some guys make some plays, and that was great to see.”

Defensively, the Mavericks put somewhat of a lid on Borah star Jevon Nelson, limiting the senior to 106 total yards and one rushing touchdown.

“That guy is the real deal. We knew that he’s the engine that runs their offense,” Compton said. “So our guys worked hard, did a great job trying to contain him — I don’t think you ever really stop him, but to contain him — and force him to do some other things.”

Borah quarterback Jacob Detwiler finished the night accounting for 253 yards of offense and had a rushing TD. Senior wide receiver Tanner Sittser also had a rushing touchdown in the second half after sophomore defensive lineman Mason McKenna jumped on a fumbled ball, Mountain View’s only turnover of the game.

The Mavericks now turn their attention to another undefeated upstart, Boise (4-0), next week, while Borah (4-1, 2-1) will face Owyhee.
