‘A dream come true.’ Skyview High stays in-house to hire its next football coach
Skyview High didn’t have to look far to find its next football coach.
The Hawks announced the hiring of David Robinson on Tuesday, elevating the program’s offensive coordinator the past 15 years into his first head coaching job.
Robinson, 42, said he has worked toward becoming a head coach the past five years. But when Skyview’s David Young resigned two weeks ago, it presented an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
“It’s kind of my dream situation in that this is where I live and this is where I’ve taught for 17 years,” Robinson said. “To be able to take over this program is a special opportunity for me. It’s a dream come true.”
Robinson becomes just the fourth football coach in the Nampa school’s 27-year history. He steps in for Young, who in 20 years led Skyview to a 104-96 (.520) record, four 4A Southern Idaho Conference titles and 16 playoffs appearances.
Robinson, a science teacher, served alongside Young for much of his tenure, building one of the state’s top offenses year in and year out. The Hawks have averaged 30 or more points per game 10 times in Robinson’s 15 years as offensive coordinator.
“He’s an offensive guru. We’ve already seen that,” Skyview Athletic Director Eric Bonds said. “He’s just going to add his stamp onto the program, and it’ll be a bit different. We’re excited about what he has planned for it.”
Skyview returned to the 4A classification last fall and stumbled to a 2-8 record while still making the playoffs. Robinson said rebuilding the program will require reestablishing connections with the youth programs that feed into Skyview.
“One of our priorities is to connect with our middle schools and our elementaries, and help the kids feel like we want them here, help them envision themselves here one day,” Robinson said.
Bonds acknowledged that Skyview moved quickly to hire Robinson, naming him the head coach just 11 days after Young’s resignation. But he said Skyview needed to act fast with all of the open jobs in the Treasure Valley.
Skyview was the second school in the 5A and 4A Southern Idaho Conference to name a new football coach this offseason, after Owyhee hired former Borah coach Jason Burton earlier this month.
Jobs at Bishop Kelly, Caldwell, Capital, Centennial and Nampa remain open.
