Capital football coach resigns. Former power looking for its second coach in two years
Capital High football coach Jay Bohner has resigned his position, leaving the Eagles searching for another new leader of their program.
Bohner returned to his alma mater this summer as the sixth coach in program history. But after a 2-7 season this fall, the worst in program history, he opted to step down.
“I definitely wish we could have done things differently, be more successful,” Bohner said. “But it is what it is. We just didn’t do what we needed to do. I didn’t do what I needed to do to make the program as successful as it can be.”
Bohner, 52, replaced Todd Simis, who resigned last year after 18 seasons at Capital. The Eagles had few outside expectations entering the season, finishing eighth out of 13 teams in a 5A SIC preseason coaches’ poll with just three returning starters. Capital then missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006, snapping a 15-year run of postseason appearances, the longest active streak in the 5A SIC.
“It’s a good school. It’s going to be a great program,” Bohner said. “It’s time for a new guy to come in and see what they can do.”
Capital has already begun searching for the seventh coach in the school’s 58-year history. The job is posted on the Boise School District website, and Capital Athletic Director Jason Willer said the school will begin marketing the position more aggressively soon.
The job posting is open until Dec. 22, and Willer said the school plans to make a hire after the winter break.
“Everybody is looking for Xs and Os,” Willer said. “But we definitely want someone who is all about building the right culture and continuing the traditions at Capital. We have a long history of tradition here at Capital.”
