Prep football recap: 5A state playoff field set. Vallivue rallies late. 2A, 1A titles awarded
The final week of the Idaho high school football season saw teams in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference punch their tickets to state.
After the cross-division round, these are the teams headed to the playoffs and next week’s first-round matchups:
Kuna at Rocky Mountain
Owyhee at Rigby
Middleton at Lewiston
Mountain View at Nampa
Meridian and Eagle both received byes into the 5A quarterfinals.
Playoff berths and matchups at the 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A Division I level will have to wait until the final MaxPreps rankings are released Sunday.
MOUNTAIN VIEW 52, CAPITAL 7
Dallin Van Gieson ran for 195 yards and three TDs as the Mavericks (5-4) rolled into the 5A playoffs.
Kelton Richmond added 137 rushing yards and two scores to put Capital away early. Mountain View finished with 352 rushing yards while averaging 9.5 yards per carry.
The loss snapped Capital’s run of 15 straight playoff appearances. The Eagles finished 2-7 this season.
NAMPA 24, CENTENNIAL 14
The Bulldogs clinched a 5A state playoff berth in their first season back in the state’s top classification.
Nampa running back Daniel Carrillo turned 29 carries into 160 yards and a touchdown, while Dante Avjian ran for 104 yards and two TDs. Quarterback Gabe Navarro threw just one pass and completed it for 8 yards, but the rushing attack was all that was needed.
Running back Taylor Mick ran for 61 yards and a TD for Centennial, whose season ended at 1-8.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 50, BORAH 20
The Grizzlies racked up 530 total yards, averaging 11 yards per play and never punting to clinch a 5A playoff berth.
Rocky Mountain quarterback Tegan Sweaney finished 14-for-18 for 328 yards and three TDs. Art Williams ran for 129 yards and three scores on just 12 carries. And nine different receivers recorded a catch, led by Luke Luchini, who had five catches for 89 yards and a score.
Borah (4-5) QB Korbin McCarney went 18-for-28 for 193 yards, two TDs and an interception. Running back Parker Rushton added 93 yards rushing and a TD on the ground.
OWYHEE 48, TIMBERLINE 7
Kade Martin threw for 205 yards and three TDs, and Tanner Cope ran for 109 yards and three scores as the Storm wrapped up their regular season Thursday and clinched the final at-large berth in the playoffs.
Owyhee’s defense held Timberline to -9 rushing yards and forced four turnovers.
Austin Rovig was 15-of-28 for 165 yards, including a 71-yard first-quarter touchdown. Aiden Nixon caught that score and finished with seven catches for 128 yards.
VALLIVUE 38, BOISE 29
The Falcons raced out to a 26-7 lead but needed to rally in the fourth quarter.
Hayden Farner ran for 195 yards and three TDs, and he threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Sigi Rodriguez to give Vallivue (5-4) an early 10-point lead.
Boise’s Tucker Leigh returned the opening kickoff of the second half 83 yards for a score, and Alex Hess put the Brave ahead 29-26 with a 4-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.
But Koa Maio and Farner each ran for scores in the fourth quarter for the Falcons. Maio finished with 95 yards on 15 carries.
Boise (2-7) quarterback Jack Wirmerskirchen went 14-for-35 for 190 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran for a score.
EMMETT 51, RIDGEVUE 13
Dakota Perry went 7-for-9 for 110 yards and three TDs, and he ran for another score to lead the Huskies to a win in their regular-season finale.
Stevie Howe caught all three TDs from Perry, finishing with five catches for 88 yards. And Ry Fullerton ran for 211 yards and a TD for Emmett (7-2, 4-1 4A SIC).
Grayson Heil threw for 228 yards and a touchdown for Ridgevue (1-7, 0-5).
HOMEDALE 49, MCCALL-DONNELLY 0
The Trojans posted their fourth shutout of the season to score coach Matt Holtry his 100th career victory. Holtry is now 100-39.
Trenton Fisher ran for 166 yards and three TDs, and Homedale (8-1, 5-0 3A SRV) quarterback Jaxon Dines went 12-for-17 for 143 yards and a TD. Luke Henry led the defense with three interceptions.
McCall-Donnelly (4-3, 2-3) was held to 55 total yards. Quarterback Maddox Arnold finished 4-for-21 for 45 yards.
WEISER 24, FRUITLAND 0
The Wolverines held Fruitland to 167 total yards for their fifth shutout of the season.
QB Andrew Enders threw for a touchdown and ran for another for Weiser (8-1, 4-1 3A SRV), finishing the night with 103 total yards. Brock Spencer had 15 offensive touches for 120 yards and a TD, and Michael Youngberg ran for 67 yards and a score.
QB Luke Barinaga ran for 42 yards and went 12-for-20 for 37 yards for Fruitland (4-5, 3-2).
MELBA 43, NAMPA CHRISTIAN 28
The Mustangs clinched the 2A WIC crown as Gabe Shaffer ran for 281 yards and four TDs.
Carlos Colunga added 94 yards and a score as part of a 400-yard rushing day for Melba (8-1, 4-0). Quarterback Cache Beus went 9-for-15 for 119 yards and a TD.
Stats for Nampa Christian (3-5, 2-2) were not provided.
NOTUS 60, RIMROCK 0
Notus (7-1, 4-0) secured the 1A Division I WIC title for the third season in a row in overwhelming fashion as Rimrock (3-4, 2-2) forfeited at halftime.
Carter Woodland headlined the Pirates with 70 rushing yards and two TDs. He also scored on a 70-yard punt return and had a 55-yard pick-six interception.
