An injury thrust Mountain View’s Justin McGee into his first start at quarterback Friday. And he shined in his new role, totaling 350 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Mavericks to a 45-17 win at Kuna.

“Justin is a really good football player,” Mountain View coach Brian Compton said of the converted running back and receiver. “He practiced at quarterback all spring and summer because Dawson had an injury, so he’s got a lot of banked reps added. And so him being able to step in was great because of that experience he has.”

The two teams traded leads in the first half until Mountain View (4-2, 4-0 5A SIC River) blocked a punt in the Kuna end zone. Torry Whiles scooped up the loose ball for a touchdown with 1:36 left before halftime, and the Mavericks never trailed again.

“Anytime you can block a punt, that is a momentum changer,” Compton said. “And when you block it for a touchdown, it’s even a bigger one.”

That momentum change carried into the second half, with McGee finding receivers Colin Rogers and Devon Schmidt for 79- and 13-yard touchdowns to put Kuna (3-3, 1-3) away.

McGee finished 16-for-28 for 296 yards and three TDs. He also led the rushing attack with 54 yards and another score.

Rogers had seven catches for 163 yards.

“When you’re a quarterback, you have to know our whole system,” Compton said. “(Justin’s) a dual-threat guy and gives us a good chance to compete.”

Kuna quarterback Cole Luekenga, 5A’s leading passer, was met by the Mavericks’ defense throughout. He finished 17-for-33 for 146 yards and a TD. But the Kavemen couldn’t score in the second half, generating just 105 yards and punting on five of their final six possessions.

“Our defense has improved all year, and they’re really stout,” Compton said. “They’re playing really hard, they’re physical and it really makes (opponents) earn every yard they get.”
