Prep football recap: Rocky Mountain pulls away. Owyhee hangs on. 6 TDs for Homedale RB
Perennial power Rocky Mountain gave Middleton a rude welcome in its first game in the 5A classification, notching a 21-7 victory on the Vikings’ home turf.
Rocky Mountain (1-0, 1-0 5A SIC Foothills) quarterback Tegan Sweaney led the way, throwing three touchdowns to three separate receivers in a 6-minute span of the second quarter as the Grizzlies pulled away. He finished with 249 yards on 10-for-14 passing, and CJ Jacobsen hauled in five passes for 101 yards and a TD.
Meanwhile, the stout Grizzly defense gave Middleton quarterback Dekker Hagler trouble throughout the night as he finished 16-for-31 with two turnovers. Hagler scored the lone Middleton (0-1, 0-1) score in the third quarter on a 2-yard run.
OWYHEE 13, MADISON 7
It took until the final minute of regulation, but the Storm (1-0) survived a late Bobcat comeback to score a season-opening win over Madison (0-1).
Owyhee running back Tim Jamerson’s first-quarter touchdown opened the scoring, and kicker Nathan Gamette drilled 34- and 42-yard field goals to add to the lead. But defense was the story as Owyhee grabbed two interceptions and held Madison to 3-for-13 on third down.
Quarterback Ben Dredge kept the Bobcats alive with his feet, rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter before a last-minute rally stalled inside the Storm’s red zone.
KUNA 28, CENTENNIAL 3
Cole Luekenga threw for 156 yards and a touchdown, and he added another score on the ground to lead the Kavemen to a season-opening win on the road.
Luke Snarr hauled in nine passes for 101 yards and a TD. And Gus Austin led the defensive effort with eight tackles as the Patriots kept Centennial (0-1) out of the end zone.
Stats for Centennial were not reported.
BOISE 27, TIMBERLINE 0
The Brave made an impressive return to the 5A Southern Idaho Conference, blanking a crosstown rival in the season opener Saturday at Dona Larsen Park.
Boise (1-0) spent the past two seasons as an independent and was ineligible for the playoffs, and it was picked last in the 5A SIC preseason coaches’ poll.
But after a Timberline (0-1) shanked punt in the second quarter set up Boise at the Wolves’ 21-yard line, quarterback Cooper Smith found receiver Caleb Allen to open the floodgates. Two more touchdowns just before halftime proved to be the early nail in the coffin.
Timberline split quarterback duties between Ronnie Dahlberg and Austin Rovig. But an impressive defensive stand by Boise forced two turnovers and several pass breakups throughout.
Individual stats were not reported.
ELKO (NEV.) 61, SKYVIEW 35
The visiting Hawks (0-1) had offensive fireworks early with a 21-14 lead in the first quarter. But the Indians took full command from the second quarter on. No other details were reported.
