Prep football recap: Homedale wins 1 vs. 2 battle. Borah topples Capital. Nampa to playoffs

The Homedale football team clinched its fourth straight 3A SRV title with a 14-6 win over Weiser in a battle of the state’s top two ranked teams.

No. 1 Homedale took care of its end of the bargain, winning its 19th straight conference game. Then Payette upset Fruitland 24-17, guaranteeing the Trojans (8-0, 4-0) the conference crown with a week left in the regular season.

The Trojans were content to run the ball most of the night, collecting 236 rushing yards while completing just two pass attempts for 48 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Homedale got on the scoreboard with a 10-yard keeper from quarterback Jaxon Dines. The junior finished with a game-leading 136 yards on the ground and also completed 1-of-7 pass attempts for 15 yards.

Homedale then took a 14-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown run from senior running back Hayden Kincheloe, who totaled 91 yards on 19 carries.

Junior D’Orr Packer led Homedale’s defensive effort with 10 total tackles.

No. 2 Weiser (7-1, 3-1) avoided the shutout when senior quarterback Brett Spencer found younger brother Brock Spencer for a 22-yard TD strike in the fourth quarter. Brett Spencer led the Wolverines with 95 yards through the air and 94 on the ground.

Borah 24, Capital 19

After playing to a 13-all tie through three quarters, Borah (5-3, 4-1 5A SIC River) scored on special teams, defense and offense in the final frame to eek out a victory over rival Capital and clinch a second-place finish in the River Division.

Ellie Kubena made an 18-yard field goal with 7:22 to play in the fourth quarter for a 16-13 lead, and the Borah defense made it 18-13 with a safety when Capital was penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone.

Junior running back Parker Rushton extended the Lions’ lead to 24-13 on a 6-yard TD run with 2:44 to go. Rushton finished with 183 yards on 40 carries. Quarterback Korbin McCarney was 13-for-26 passing for 164 yards, including a 55-yard TD pass to Bradly Toth.

Capital led 13-6 after the first quarter but didn’t score again until Max Clark’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Kody Walk with 1:06 left in the game. Walk finished with 11 receptions for 91 yards and two TDs, and Nate Cherry returned a blocked field goal 74 yards for a touchdown in the opening quarter.

The Eagles (5-3, 3-2) hurt their own cause with 15 penalties for 155 yards.

Borah will host Skyview on Thursday in the 5A SIC cross-division round next week, while Capital battles Timberline at Dona Larsen on Friday.

Owyhee 23, Boise 20

Owyhee earned its first win in program history with a last-minute touchdown drive.

Sophomore quarterback Matt Irwin scored the go-ahead TD with 23 seconds left, and Carson Hamilton hauled in the two-point conversion catch for the final margin.

Boise (1-6) scored on the ensuing kickoff, but the touchdown was called back on a penalty.

The two teams were scoreless after the first quarter, and the Storm (1-7) held a 15-14 lead at the half. No stats were provided for either team.

The two meet again next week in the 5A cross-division round.

Eagle 52, Centennial 0

Eagle exploded for 35 points in the second quarter while its defense pitched a shutout.

Four different players scored on the ground for the Mustangs (6-2, 3-1 5A SIC Foothills), with Brandon Reese (9 carries, 67 yards) and Deegan Martinho (6-63) running for two TDs apiece. Quarterback Jack Benson added 100 yards through the air, including a TD pass to Donovan Jones, and rushed for another score.

Junior running back Roy Hull totaled a game-best 110 yards and one touchdown on eight carries.

No stats were provided for Centennial (2-6, 2-3 5A SIC River), which travels to Meridian in the 5A cross-division round. Eagle hosts Kuna.

Mountain View 48, Kuna 8

Dawson Wahl was 21-of-27 for 248 yards and five TDs to lead the No. 2-ranked Mavericks (8-0, 5A SIC River) to a dominating win in their regular-season finale.

Dominic Sotomayer caught three of those touchdowns, turning nine catches into 92 yards as Mountain View led 27-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at halftime.

The Mavericks held Kuna (1-7, 1-4) to 97 total yards and fell 1 minute, 47 seconds short of the shutout. Cole Luekenga hit Kolten Frost for a 16-yard touchdown in the final two minutes for the Kavemen’s only score.

Timberline 38, Skyview 31

Timberline wrapped up a fourth-place finish in the 5A SIC’s Foothills Division with a victory over Skyview on Thursday night at Dona Larsen Park.

Timberline senior quarterback Wade Zenner threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Senior receiver Anthony Bridges caught three of those TD passes and finished with a team-best 157 receiving yards.

Garrett Lavin provided a defensive score for the Wolves, returning an interception 23 yards for a TD, breaking a 21-all tie midway through the third quarter.

Skyview junior quarterback Max Cutforth went 14-for-25 passing for 215 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Camden Young and TerRyck Pennington each caught one TD pass, and senior running back Atonio Fifita amassed 212 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries.

Timberline faces Capital on Friday at Dona Larsen in the 5A cross-division round. Skyview battles Borah on Thursday at Dona Larsen.

Emmett 35, Columbia 12

The Huskies (7-1, 6-0 4A SIC) clinched their second straight 4A SIC title with a home win. No details were reported.

Nampa 52, Middleton 50

Senior kicker Lance Hanna clinched Nampa (4-4, 4-2) a playoff berth and a third-place finish in the 4A SIC with a 49-yard field goal as time expired.

Both teams had more than 500 yards of total offense, with Nampa amassing 577 and Middleton 532.

The Bulldogs rushed for 326 yards led by junior running back Daniel Carrillo’s 214 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Senior Ryan Schuler added 55 yards and three TDs on 13 touches, and junior Payton Gunter also had a rushing TD.

Nampa quarterback Gabe Navarro was 17-for-28 passing for 251 yards and a 62-yard TD pass to Trais Higgins, who caught 12 passes for 200 yards.

Middleton (4-4, 3-3), which led 50-49 with 1:01 to play, got five total TDs from quarterback Ky McClure. And Thompson Goodfellow had 122 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

Bishop Kelly 35, Vallivue 20

One of the 4A SIC’s top rushing teams took to the air early for a win over Vallivue (4-4, 3-3) and a guaranteed second-place finish in the league.

Bishop Kelly (6-2, 5-1), which boasts the 4A classification’s leading rusher in Seth Knothe, scored two of its first three touchdowns through the air.

Junior quarterback Hadley Smith threw TD passes of 27 and 15 yards to receiver James Bell, and then the Knights unleashed Knothe, who scored twice in the fourth quarter on runs of 6 and 84 yards. Smith finished 8-for-14 passing for 100 yards, while Knothe collected 220 yards on 23 carries.

Vallivue quarterback Santi Diaz attempted to rally the Falcons with a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to Jaxon Kent and Camryn Dean. The Falcons got as close as 21-14 with 8:52 to go before Knothe scored both his TDs in less than 30 seconds to seal the win.

Senior defensive back Gabe Lamey set up Knothe’s second touchdown with an interception of Diaz.

Ridgevue 21, Caldwell 20

Ridgevue (1-6, 1-5 4A SIC) edged Caldwell for its first victory of the season, stopping a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to hang on.

Senior running back Zack Saulls scored Ridgevue’s first two touchdowns on runs of 3 and 1 yard. But it was sophomore Izaiah Stewart-Kasper who led the Warhawks on the ground with 93 yards on six carries.

Senior quarterback Cole McDonald teamed up with junior receiver Jaxson Bauscher for a 32-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter, and Stewart-Kasper scored what would turn out to be the game-winning two-point conversion run.

No stats were provided for Caldwell (0-8, 0-6).

Nampa Christian 40, Melba 20

Nampa Christian took over sole possession of first place in the 2A Western Idaho Conference by knocking off Melba.

No. 5 Melba (5-3, 3-1) scored first, but the fourth-ranked Trojans (7-1, 3-0) responded with four unanswered touchdowns to take a 26-6 lead and never looked back.

Senior quarterback Landon Cheney completed 10-of-17 passes for 244 yards and five touchdowns. Senior running back Dane Bradshaw gave the Trojans’ offense balance with 146 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. Bradshaw also caught a pair of TD receptions, and senior Caleb Johnson caught four passes for a game-leading 139 receiving yards and two TDs.

Melba was led by sophomore quarterback Cache Beus, who went 8-for-13 passing for 78 yards, including a 19-yard TD pass to Noah West. Senior Trace Stimpson was the Mustangs’ top threat on the ground, totaling 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Notus 62, Rimrock 22

Notus’ win set up a 1A Division I Western Idaho Conference championship game with Wilder next week.

The Pirates (7-1, 3-0) led 54-6 at halftime as junior running back Carter Woodland torched the Raiders for 236 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Woodland also racked up 175 yards on kick/punt returns.

Adding to the Pirates’ offensive onslaught was senior quarterback Kaeden Clemens (6-for-10 passing, 105 yards, TD) and senior running back Elijah Martin (7 carries, 104 yards, 2 TDs).

Quarterback Ronaldo Gomez led Rimrock (3-3, 2-2) with 157 total yards and three TDs (two passing, one rushing).

Horseshoe Bend 72, Garden Valley 20

Horseshoe Bend’s perfect season continued with an easy victory over 1A Division II Long Pin foe Garden Valley.

Senior quarterback Colten Meyer was a touchdown machine, totaling 165 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and throwing for 180 yards and five more TDs. Junior running back Blayne Meyer added 141 rushing yards of his own, and senior receiver Decker Larson amassed 116 receiving yards and three scores.

Senior defensive linemen Keegan Smith and Larson combined for 11 tackles and nine sacks for the Mustangs (7-0, 3-0).

No stats were provided for Garden Valley (3-5, 2-2).

Council 70, Salmon River 12

Council set up a winner-take-all showdown against Horseshoe Bend for the 1A Division II Long Pin title next week with a rout of Salmon River.

Senior running back Trinity Hoxie ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wideout Thatcher McClinn collected 114 yards receiving with two TDs and added a rushing score.

Sophomore cornerback Dalton Bingham returned two interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Lumberjacks (5-1, 3-0) on defense.

No stats were provided for Salmon River (2-5, 0-3).
