Prep football roundup: Fourth-quarter drama, a historic start and a walk-off field goal

Nampa rallied late in the fourth quarter for a 41-40 win over No. 5-ranked Emmett, throwing the 4A Southern Idaho Conference standings into disarray.

Nampa quarterback Isaak Plew scored the game-winning score with a 3-yard TD run with 1:04 left in the fourth quarter. That touchdown marked the fourth lead change of the fourth quarter. He also fired the two-point pass home to Colton Seable, points that proved essential.

Emmett responded with Caden Young’s 72-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Maxwell on the next play from scrimmage. But Nampa stopped the go-ahead, two-point conversion with 53 seconds left to hold on for the win.

Nampa’s win creates a three-way tie for second place in the 4A SIC standings between Nampa (2-1, 2-1 4A SIC), Emmett (3-2, 2-1) and Bishop Kelly (2-1, 2-1).

Plew led Nampa by completing 6-of-10 passes for 205 yards and four TDs. He also ran for 65 yards and the game-winning score.

Efrain Lopez caught four passes for 137 yards and two TDs, including an 80-yard score in the fourth quarter. Ryan Schuler also ran for 74 yards and a TD for the Bulldogs.

Westyn Smith paced Emmett with 207 rushing yards and four TDs. Young ran for 146 yards and a TD, adding 96 yards and a score through the air.

Timberline 49, Boise 13

Quarterback Max Spielman completed 13-of-18 passes for 233 yards and two TDs, and he ran for another score to lead Timberline to a 2-0 start to the season.

Taylor Marcum added 104 rushing yards and two TDs as the Wolves cruised past Boise (0-2, 0-2 5A SIC East). Marcum also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Timberline’s Anthony Bridges hauled in five passes for 119 yards and a TD, and Garrett Lavin had five catches for 96 yards and a score.

Vallivue 54, Caldwell 0

The Falcons pitched a shutout to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2010.

Junior quarterback Casey Cope accounted for six total touchdowns. He finished 7-of-9 for 148 yards and four TDs through the air, adding 69 yards and two TDs on the ground.

The Falcons (3-0 4A SIC) also ran for 281 yards at 9.4 yards per carry. Kip Childs (96 yards) led the ground attack. Lincoln Marler caught three passes for 85 yards and three TDs. And Santi Diaz scored a touchdown receiving and on a pick-six interception.

Matthew Vialet led Caldwell (0-2, 0-2 4A SIC) with 80 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Bishop Kelly 52, Columbia 7

The Knights (2-1, 2-1 4A SIC) jumped out to a 31-0 lead en route to their second straight win.

Seth Knothe led the way from the start, returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. He also ran for 86 yards and three TDs.

BK quarterback Keegan Croteau finished 5-of-8 for 123 yards with a TD. He also ran for 29 yards and added 64 yards on two punt returns for a total of 216 all-purpose yards.

Matthew Davis scored the lone touchdown for Columbia (1-2, 1-2) on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

Middleton 49, Ridgevue 29

The Vikings (3-1, 1-1 4A SIC) racked up 517 yards of offense and overcame five turnovers to score their first conference win.

Middleton QB Ky McClure finished 19-of-28 for 238 yards with three TDs. The Vikings also ran for 265 yards. Brock Phillips led the way with 125 yards and three TDs on 12 carries, and Thompson Goodfellow ran for 96 yards and a score on 13 carries.

Zander Mallard returned an interception 65 yards for a TD for Ridgevue (1-3, 0-3). QB Cole McDonald finished 14-of-23 for 147 yards with one TD and two interceptions, and Kolton McKie caught eight passes for 95 yards and a score.

Fruitland 18, Weiser 15

The Grizzlies (4-0, 1-0) ground out a win over the Wolverines (1-3, 0-3).

Fruitland only attempted two passes, opting to run the ball 46 times for 212 yards and three TDs. Fruitland’s Dylan Stelling (11 carries, 57 yards), Hunter Forbes (six carries, 50 yards) and Karson Lutter (nine carries, 49 yards) ate up most of the turf. But Luke Barinaga (two TDs) and Jacob Walker (one TD) found the end zone.

Quarterback Brett Spencer finished with 189 total yards and a touchdown running and throwing for Weiser.

Homedale 33, McCall-Donnelly 12

Homedale overwhelmed McCall-Donnelly with its powerful ground game in a matchup of 3A Snake River Valley squads.

The Trojans (2-1, 1-0) amassed 411 rushing yards thanks to a massive effort from Hayden Kincheloe. The running back totaled 297 yards on the ground with three TDs on 35 touches. Quarterback Jaxon Dines added 67 rushing yards and two scores and was an efficient 10-for-11 passing for another 67 yards.

McCall-Donnelly (1-2, 0-1) was limited to 147 total yards. Cooper Stokes scored the Vandals’ only touchdown of the game on 72-yard run, and Mahonri Rushton made field goals of 23 and 41 yards.

Payette 31, Parma 28

Martin Ceballos kicked the game-winning, 40-yard field goal as time expired to lead the Pirates (3-1) to a win in the 3A SRV opener for both teams, the Argus Observer reported.

Payette’s Abe Rodriguez threw four TDs, two each to Zander Allen and Ty Waynetska.

Melba 41, Cole Valley Christian 0

Melba blanked Cole Valley Christian (2-2, 0-1) in the 2A Western Idaho Conference opener for both teams.

Senior quarterback Henry Clark led the Mustangs’ charge with 274 passing yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Senior receiver Cameron Wood totaled 148 receiving yards for Melba (2-1, 1-0) and took care of business on defense with four tackles and an interception at cornerback.

Nampa Christian 34, Buhl 21

The Trojans (3-2) rallied from an early deficit behind Landon Cheney’s arm and Dane Bradshaw’s legs.

Cheney completed 20-of-32 passes for 223 yards and three TDs. Bradshaw ran for 158 yards and two TDs, and he caught one pass for a 50-yard score.

Josh Tiersma led the defensive with two interceptions.

Aberdeen 56, New Plymouth 12

Notus 40, Idaho City 20

Notus kept its perfect record intact with a victory over Idaho City in the 1A D-I Western Idaho Conference opener for both teams.

The Pirates (4-0, 1-0) rallied behind quarterback Kaeden Clemens, who threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Carter Woodland chipped in 109 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards and two TDs on offense and then added seven tackles and an interception on defense. Kieran Miraz contributed eight solo tackles.

No statistical information was provided for Idaho City (0-3, 0-1).

Wilder 40, Greenleaf 0

Wilder improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in 1A D-I WIC. Greenleaf is 0-2. No statistical information was reported.

Garden Valley 50, Salmon River 0
