Boys basketball: McCall scores first-round upset. Ambrose keeps repeat hopes alive

It was a tough opening round for Treasure Valley boys basketball teams on the first day of the state tournament.

Of the 11 District Three teams playing in the 5A through 1A classifications, only McCall-Donnelly (4A), Ambrose (3A) and Garden Valley (1A) advanced to the semifinals.

Here is a roundup of how Boise-area teams did in first-round action.

5A STATE TOURNAMENT

HILLCREST 46, COLUMBIA 37: A 20-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters erased the Wildcats’ eight-point lead and gave Hillcrest a win in the first round Thursday at Rocky Mountain High School.

Columbia led 30-22 with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter before a scoring drought doomed its chance at the program’s first win in the opening round at state. The Wildcats were making just their second tournament appearance, the only other coming in 2019.

“We start three sophomores and a freshman, so to come here and play a team like Hillcrest, who has been here before and understands what it looks like and the physicality of the state tournament, everything that they do, it was eye-opening, obviously,” Columbia coach Blaine Wright said.

“But it’s a great springboard into where we want to be and for these young guys to see just how basketball is played at the state tournament.”

Third-seeded Hillcrest (19-5) has made three straight state championship games, including wins in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, No. 6 Columbia (14-13) finished fifth out of eight teams during the 5A SIC regular season and had to upset No. 2 Bishop Kelly and No. 3 Skyview in the district tournament to qualify for state.

The Wildcats had nothing to lose Thursday against the favored Knights, and for the first few minutes of the third quarter, it appeared as though they might pull off the upset.

Hillcrest led 30-29 at halftime before Columbia stormed out of the locker room on a 13-0 run, including seven points during that stretch from sophomore Max Keller, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

But just as swiftly as the Wildcats seized the lead, the momentum shifted in Hillcrest’s favor, as the Knights rattled off that 20-0 run, part of which allowed them to outscore Columbia 17-7 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

“I was in fourth grade the first time Columbia made it to state,” Keller said. “I was a little kid, and I got to leave school and go watch the game. Then we’ve been bad for so many years, and I’ve been really thinking about that. I want to be that team that inspires little kids.”

Keller and the rest of the Wildcats still have a chance at history if they can play their way through the consolation bracket. That win-or-go-home journey starts Friday when Columbia takes on Lewiston (20-5) at noon at Rocky Mountain.

BONNEVILLE 53, MIDDLETON 48: For nearly three quarters, the Vikings did an admirable job disrupting the Bees’ 3-point shots.

Then came the fourth quarter.

Bonneville knocked down five 3-pointers in the final frame to rally for a victory over Middleton on Friday at Rocky Mountain. The Bees were just 1-for-14 from beyond the arc in the first half before finding their stroke down the stretch to erase as much as a 12-point deficit.

“I give those guys credit,” Middleton coach Josh Downey said. “Because they hit some deep, contested threes.”

Bonneville started off the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer from senior point guard Dallin Jardine, and junior guard Tyler Jordan quickly followed with a triple of his own to give the Bees their first lead of the game, 39-37, with about seven minutes remaining.

“I took the blame, because they were 1-for-14, and I’m like, ‘Alright, I feel like they’re gonna get comfortable in the second half and start making those, so let’s go zone and throw them off a little bit,’” Downey said. “We’ve done that a few times this year, but then it backfired, and that’s on me.”

With the game tied at 48-all, Jordan sank a 3-pointer — his third of the game — about five feet beyond the arc. Middleton got the ball back and tried for a 3 of its own with under 40 seconds left, but the shot rolled in and out.

The Vikings then attempted to force a turnover with full-court pressure, only to see the Bees break the press and score an easy layup.

Jordan and senior Ryan Egbert each totaled 19 points to lead the Bees (16-10), who take on No. 1 Preston (23-1) in Friday’s semifinals at 7:30 p.m. at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. Hillcrest and Twin Falls meet in the other semifinal at 5 p.m.

Junior guard Tye Cornwall was the only Viking to score in double figures, netting 11 of his team-best 17 points in the second half. Senior forward Blake Bishop chipped in eights points and 10 rebounds, and senior Luke Jones and junior Drew Holman added seven points apiece.

Middleton (17-8) will try to keep its season alive in an elimination game against Jerome (11-14) at 2 p.m. Friday at Rocky.

“Hopefully tomorrow they bounce back and realize that they need to do what they’ve been doing all year to get here,” Downey said. “The scoreboard will take care of itself if you just stay the course.”

4A STATE TOURNAMENT

MCCALL-DONNELLY 48, SUGAR-SALEM 47: Senior guard Maddox Arnold made 1-of-2 free throws with 9.6 seconds left to give the Vandals just enough cushion in a first-round victory at Eagle High School.

District Three champion McCall-Donnelly (15-9), the No. 6 seed, moved into the semifinals against No. 2 Snake River (24-3) at 5 p.m. Friday at Eagle.
