2A All-Idaho boys basketball team | 2022-2023
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: GREYSON SANDS, ST. MARIES
Why he is player of the year: The 6-foot point guard had a hand in everything to lead the Lumberjacks to a third-place trophy at state. His mix of vision, quickness and tenacity allowed him to rack up 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
Coach’s comment: “He’s helped lead us to a first, second and two third-place finishes in the last four state tournaments,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said.
What others are saying: “I felt like Greyson was the most complete player in the 2As. He was seemingly able to score at will, get his teammates involved and defend with tenacity. I loved the way this kid played the game,” Declo coach Jacoby Fox said.
What’s next: He is weighing offers from Eastern Oregon and Treasure Valley Community College.
BRYSON CRANE, BEAR LAKE
The state champs fielded a balanced lineup, but the 6-4 junior forward sparked them when they needed it most. He could handle the ball, attack the basket, and clean up the offensive and defensive glass. It added up to 14.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
BRADEN VOLKERS, MELBA
The lethally efficient senior point guard shot 64% from the floor, racking up 16.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals for the state runner-up. On any other team, he would have led the state in scoring. But he shared the ball and kept the Mustangs in sync.
RIPLY LUNA, KELLOGG
The 6-2 senior point guard set the tone on both ends of the floor. He was a disruptive force on defense (2.5 steals), feeding a transition offense. And on offense, he fed open teammates (3.8 assists) while doing plenty of damage of his own with 18.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
KOLBY LUNA, KELLOGG
He and his twin brother, Riply, will walk on and play football at Miami (Florida). But first they took one last turn as a dominating pair on the hardwood. The 6-2 senior guard took the toughest defensive assignments yet still tallied 15.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals a night.
COACH OF THE YEAR: BRANDON CARLSEN, BEAR LAKE
He built 2A’s top defense (42.3 ppg) out of a zone to put the Bears back on top.
