5A All-Idaho boys basketball team: The state’s top talent from its top classification
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: BLAKE BUCHANAN, LAKE CITY
Why he is player of the year: Idaho has not seen a talent like the 6-11 senior center in a long time, if ever. The state’s all-class Gatorade player of the year changed the game when he was on the floor. He led Lake City to a perfect season (26-0) with 15.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.2 blocks per game.
Coach’s comment: “Obviously, he’s a great talent that is 6-11. But he has worked his way to the ACC,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said.
What others are saying: “During (my) 16 seasons as a head coach, we have been fortunate to play against three current NBA players while they were in high school. Blake Buchanan is at their level,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said.
What’s next: The four-star recruit has signed with Virginia.
KOLTON MITCHELL, LAKE CITY
The four-year starting point guard teamed with Buchanan to form a lethal one-two punch. The Idaho State commit leaves Lake City as its all-time leading scorer. But he did more than just score, averaging 18.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.8 steals as a senior.
LIAM CAMPBELL, OWYHEE
Opponents regularly face-guarded and double-teamed the 6-5 junior guard. It didn’t help much as he poured in a 5A-leading 20.1 points per game while shooting 50% from the floor to make the first team for a second time. He holds nine Division I offers entering the offseason.
LANDON WHITE, EAGLE
A double-double machine, the 6-6 senior forward broke the Mustangs’ single-game scoring record twice this year (40, 43) and set a new single-game rebounding record (19). A threat inside and out, he averaged 18.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
LOGAN HAUSTVEIT, MOUNTAIN VIEW
The freshman took the state by storm, quickly establishing himself as one of Idaho’s best. The 5-9 point guard never shied away from the spotlight, using his next-level court vision to put on a show and rack up 16.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game.
COACH OF THE YEAR: JIM WINGER, LAKE CITY
He guided Lake City to its first state title and the first undefeated 5A season in nine years.
