Mountain View keeps rolling with freshman-led win over defending state champ Owyhee
Dyson Judd had to watch last season as the Owyhee boys basketball team swept Mountain View, celebrating three wins over Judd and his teammates, including one that came in blowout fashion.
Judd, the Mavericks’ only returning starter, enjoyed some revenge Thursday night.
Freshman Logan Haustveit drove the lane and dished to the senior winger, who banked in the winning shot with less than 3 seconds left to give Mountain View (8-3, 2-0 5A SIC) a 66-65 victory over the Storm (6-4, 2-1).
“(Coach Jon Nettleton) gave us the go and we just made it happen,” Judd said. “(Owyhee) beat us by 30 at their place last year, so it was nice to get one back.”
Haustveit scored 28 points for the Mavericks, who won their sixth straight game, and Judd finished with 12 points and six rebounds in an intense matchup that featured 23 lead changes and 11 ties. A four-point Mountain View lead was the largest of the night by either team.
“We got off to a rough start in the beginning of the year, but we know what we can do and what we’re capable of,” Judd said. “We’re one of the most talented teams in the state, and when we play with that combo we know we can win.”
A Mountain View foul with 17 seconds left put Owyhee’s Preston Sherburne at the line, and he made one of two free throws to give the defending 5A state champs a 65-64 lead.
An inbounds pass to Haustveit then led to his eventual drive to the basket. That forced the Storm’s defense to collapse in the lane, and the freshman squeezed the ball past a pair of defenders to an open Judd for the game-winner.
“We’ve run (that play) before and we knew that (Owyhee would) pay extra attention to Logan coming off that pick-and-roll,” Nettleton said. “And we just told Dyson to slip on that or roll really hard, because all that attention is going to Logan, and Logan made a heck of a pass.”
Haustveit’s assist was one of his many highlights. He got two offensive rebounds on his own missed shots in the first quarter, scoring both times. He knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give Mountain View a 45-42 lead with 1:17 to go in the third quarter, and his deep triple with less than 2 minutes to play gave the Mavs a 62-59 lead.
Haustveit scored 21 of his points in the second half.
“Logan’s got that dog inside of him,” Nettleton said. “He’s got that ‘it’ factor in the sense of not backing down. He gets after it, and that confidence oozes to the other guys.”
Junior guard Liam Campbell led the Storm with 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting. His basket evened the score at 59-59 with 1:50 left to play, and he had a key drive and layup to cut Mountain View’s lead to 62-61, setting up a frantic final minute.
Jackson Rasmussen added 13 points and six rebounds for the Storm.
