Boise senior dominated all season. Now she’s the Gatorade state player of the year
For the second year in a row, Boise High’s Avery Howell has been chosen as the Gatorade Idaho Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Howell averaged 21.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.9 steals per game, leading the Brave to a third-place trophy at the state tournament and an overall record of 24-2. Last month, she was named the 5A Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year, helping Boise win a third straight district championship.
“I just think she’s a complete player,” Rocky Mountain coach BJ Humphreys said in a news release. “Howell is a (great) rebounder, defender, passer and playmaker.”
The 6-foot senior guard shot 57% from the floor, including 46% from 3-point range, and knocked down 81% of her free throws this season. She has signed with USC.
Howell also is a 2024 McDonald’s All-American Game selection, making her only the second Idaho female in history to be selected. ESPN ranks her as a 5-star recruit and the No. 23 prospect in the nation.
Howell is the fourth Boise girls basketball player to win the state’s all-class award, joining Peyton McFarland (2019-20), Jackie Luna-Castro (2010-11) and Maggie Burkett (2005-06).
