The San Diego Padres assigned outfielder Mason Smith to the Tri-City Dust Devils on Thursday, marking the 2013 Rocky Mountain High graduate’s second summer in the short-season A Northwest League.

Smith, 21, last played in Double-A with the San Antonio Missions, hitting .083 in nine games. The Padres’ fourth-round pick in 2013 started the season late in Low-A Fort Wayne after an injury, hitting .135 in 17 games.

Smith had his best season as a pro with Tri-City last season, hitting .226 with two home runs and 30 RBIs in 55 games. Through four season, he holds a career .199 batting average.

The Dust Devils don’t face the Boise Hawks until Aug. 4, when they begin a five-game series in Boise.
