Rocky Mountain’s Slagowski fourth at Prefontaine Classic

Rocky Mountain High senior Michael Slagowski clocked 3 minutes, 59.78 seconds in the mile at Saturday’s Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., 7.12 seconds back of winner Charlie Grice of Great Britain.

Slagowski beat former Olympian Leo Manzano by 0.49 seconds.

Dawit Wolde of Ethiopia was second (3:55.80), and Jordan McNamara of the United States took third (3:58.28).

Slagowski, the 5A state champion in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, also owns the fastest 800 time by a high school runner this year at 1:48.36.

He became the ninth high school runner to break the four-minute barrier in the mile April 29 at the Nike Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland, winning the elite mile event in 3:59.53.
