Rocky Mountain senior Michael Slagowski will compete against some of the best distance runners in the world Saturday as part of the national mile event at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore.

The Penn State signee broke the four-minute mile mark at 3 minutes, 59.53 seconds April 29 at the Nike Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland. He’s one of nine high school runners to break the mark in U.S. history, and one of two this season.

The race includes U.S. Olympians Leonel Manzano, a silver medalist in 2012 in the 1,500, and Andrew Wheating.

Slagowski, a 5A state champion in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, also owns the fastest 800 time by a high school runner this year at 1:48.36.
