Kuna sweeps baseball, softball 4A district titles

BASEBALL

4A: KUNA 7, BISHOP KELLY 1

Asher Hendrix struck out 11 batters, and the Kavemen pounded out 11 hits in a victory over Bishop Kelly in the 4A District Three Tournament championship.

The district title is Kuna’s first at the 4A level. The Kavemen last won a district crown as a 3A team in 1999. They went on to win state that season.

Ross Blattner led Kuna (13-13) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Bishop Kelly (15-10) mustered just two hits as Hendrix registered the complete-game victory.

Both teams are headed to state, which begins Thursday in Twin Falls.

3A: FRUITLAND 2, HOMEDALE 1

Casey Rodriguez and Matt Murphy each had two hits as the Grizzlies won their 11th straight district title.

Fruitland (19-7) and Homedale (16-6) both advance to the state tournament, which begins Thursday at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.

SOFTBALL

4A: KUNA 2, MIDDLETON 1

Mickey Kleffner hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning to lift Kuna (19-6-1) to its first district championship since 2012.

Kleffner also earned the victory, striking out eight.

Lainey Lyle hit a home run to put Middleton (20-4) on the board in the top of the fourth and give the Vikings a short-lived lead.

The 4A state tournament begins Friday at Twin Falls High.

3A: HOMEDALE 8, EMMETT 0

Dakota Kelly struck out 15 batters as the Trojans won their third straight district title with a shutout against Emmett (17-7).

Gardenia Machuca was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Homedale (23-2).

The 3A state tournament begins Friday at Ward Park in Pocatello.
