Idaho state baseball: Skyview upsets defending champ. Fruitland, Homedale advance

Three Treasure Valley teams scored first-round wins in the 5A to 2A classifications on the opening day of the Idaho state baseball tournaments.

Skyview upended the defending state champs in the first round of the 5A event, while Homedale and Fruitland set up a second-round clash in 4A with wins Thursday.

Here’s a look at how Boise-area teams fared in the opening round.

IDAHO 5A BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT

SKYVIEW 4, BONNEVILLE 3: The Hawks upset the top-seeded and defending state champion Bees in the first round Thursday at Melaleuca Field in Idaho Falls.

Skyview (21-3) scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab the win, with Jaxon Phillips crossing the plate for the game-winner on a wild pitch.

The Hawks play No. 2 Sandpoint — a 5-4 winner over Twin Falls — in the winners’ bracket at 4 p.m. Friday.

Tyler Russell had two of Skyview’s five hits and a pair of RBIs. Pitcher Elijah Strong earned the win for the Hawks, while Ledger Downs picked up the save, pitching 1 ⅔ innings of relief.

Fourth-seeded Skyview enters Friday’s game against No. 2 Sandpoint having won 17 straight games.

IDAHO 4A BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT

HOMEDALE 3, MARSH VALLEY 0: The Trojans opened the state tournament with a complete-game shutout win from pitcher Mason Taylor on Thursday at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.

Taylor struck out seven and walked just one while allowing eight hits. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Lukas Hall and Xavier Uranga added two hits apiece for Homedale (23-6), which plays Fruitland in the winners’ bracket at 4 p.m. Friday.

FRUITLAND 6, COLE VALLEY CHRISTIAN 2: The Grizzlies scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in a first-round win over the Chargers on Thursday in Twin Falls.

Fruitland (22-2) faces district rival Homedale in the second round Friday.

Crew Stringer was one of six Fruitland players to record a hit and added two RBIs against Cole Valley. Jayden Grosdidier collected the win on the mound, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out six in five innings. Grosdidier also went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Lucas Guray and Carson Kile each had an RBI for Cole Valley (16-10), which takes on Marsh Valley in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. Friday.

IDAHO 3A BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT

OROFINO 2, MELBA 0: Despite outhitting the Maniacs 7-1, errors cost the Mustangs in the first round of the state tournament Thursday at Wolfe Field in Caldwell.

Orofino scored both of its runs on an error in the fourth inning.

CJ Husted and Ty Martineau led Melba (23-3) with two hits apiece. Cooper Brooks was saddled with the loss, allowing one hit over six innings with eight strikeouts and no earned runs.

Melba, which saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end, plays Salmon in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. Friday.

IDAHO 2A BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT

POTLATCH 5, NORTH STAR CHARTER 4: The Loggers scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie in the first round Thursday at Church Field in Lewiston.

North Star Charter (13-9) faces Kendrick in a loser-out game Friday.

Leadoff hitter Luke Fox led the Huskies in the loss, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Jacob Jones and Carlos Guzman added two hits each.
