Owyhee softball needed a hero. Two stepped up to clinch a 6A district title

Known as the “Killer B’s,” Hailey Brennan and Hailey Bock have carried the Owyhee softball team all year. And when the Storm needed them the most, the duo stepped up again Friday.

Bock cranked a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to break a tie, then Brennan danced her way out of a jam in the bottom half of the frame to clinch Owyhee a 4-2 win over Eagle in the 6A District Three Tournament championship on the Storm’s home field.

“I think we have the player of the year and the player of the year 1-B,” Owyhee coach John Carpenter said. “Maybe not even 1-B. Maybe 1, and 1 and 1/10th because those two kids are studs.”

The budding rivalry between two of the state’s top programs lived up to the billing in Friday’s championship game.

Eagle (20-6-1) tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Peyton Bargen sent her own two-run home run over the center-field fence. That blast marked just the third and fourth runs Brennan has surrendered in 77 ⅔ innings all season, raising the Boise State commit’s ERA to 0.36. But Owyhee (24-2) answered when the game went to extra innings.

Bock stood as the hero in the pitcher’s circle Tuesday night with a no-hitter. She then showed her power at the plate Friday, destroying an 0-1 screwball and sending it over the center-field fence.

Bock said Bargen spent all evening feeding her pitches on the outer half and outside off the plate. But she punished the one mistake Bargen left within reach.

The celebration was short-lived as an error put Eagle runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth inning with no outs. Brennan’s dominance meant she rarely faced any pressure situations all year. But she reared back and struck out the next two batters to finish with 14 punchouts, then induced a grounder back to herself to wrap up the Storm’s third district title in five years.

“Hailey always has a calm presence when she’s out there,” Bock said. “She never looks stressed. She always looks like she’s in control of herself and like she knows exactly what she’s doing.”

Both teams clinched their state tournament berths by reaching the district finals. But Brennan pointed out district tournament success doesn’t always translate to state.

Teams from the Southern Idaho Conference have won 11 straight state championships. Yet the last five district champs from Boise failed to bring home a state title.

“That’s not going to be us this year,” Brennan said. “We’re gonna push through. We’ll probably, honestly, face Eagle in the state championship.”

Seeds and first-round matchups for next week’s state tournament in Coeur d’Alene will be released Sunday by the state activities association.

Capital (16-9) and Rocky Mountain (15-13) will also represent the 6A SIC at the tournament. And Mountain View (14-8) has a chance to grab the last berth in a state play-in game against Coeur d’Alene (18-2) on Saturday.
