3 Boise-area wrestlers crowned champions at Rollie Lane. They were all girls

One of the premier high school wrestling tournaments in the Northwest descended upon the Treasure Valley this weekend. And it was up to the girls to defend the region’s reputation.

Three Southwest Idaho females captured individual titles at the 26th Rollie Lane Invitational at Nampa’s Ford Idaho Center, marking the only three champions from the region.

Boise-area boys went 0-for-5 in the championship round. And no local school — boys or girls — brought home a team title as the tournament swelled to 175 total teams (92 boys, 83 girls).

But the Treasure Valley’s success in the girls division should no longer come as a surprise, Kuna girls wrestling coach Jeff Tucker said.

“The girls in the Valley here compete a lot in the summertime, nationally and regionally, and with a lot of success as well,” Tucker said. “You look at the college level, the amount of girls we have wrestling in college — Idaho girls and Treasure Valley girls — it’s high up there. And some are nationally ranked.”

A sophomore from one of the state’s smallest schools led the charge. Tri-Valley’s Charlee Noah (23-0) rolled through the 125-pound bracket, pinning five of the six opponents she faced in the first round to earn the tournament’s most outstanding girls middleweight award.

The dominant performance included a 1-minute, 26-second pin of Redmond’s Mia Pedersen, a reigning Oregon state champ, in the championship match for her second major tournament title in a month. She also won the Reno Tournament of Champions in December.

Kuna junior Taylor Drake (16-0) added to the region’s success. She was the only returning female state champ in the Treasure Valley entering the season, and she’s more than kept up the pace.

She ran her high school winning streak to 39 straight matches at Rollie Lane, recording two pins and three tech falls before an 18-8 major decision over Idaho Falls’ Airianna Ayala in the 150-pound final.

Her previous best finishes at Rollie Lane included back-to-back fourth-place medals.

“It was just a lot of grit, a lot of toughness,” Tucker said. “It was a lot of matches, and she scored a lot of points. She dominated her weight for the most part.”

But the breakthrough match of the day came in the first title bout. Centennial junior Ava Bui (19-2) took second at Rollie Lane and second at state last year. But she broke through Saturday for her first major tournament title, pinning West Jefferson’s Alena Messerli in 52 seconds in the girls’ 100-pound final.

The victory avenged a one-point loss to Messerli in last year’s Rollie Lane finals in the same weight class and helped earn her the meet’s most outstanding lightweight award.

“It helps her know that she’s moving in the right direction, and the work she is putting in is going the right way,” Centennial coach Jason Blue said. “She’s ecstatic for the win. But she’s still hunting and chasing down that state title. This is just another step toward that.”

THUNDER RIDGE CROWNED GIRLS CHAMPS

The Titans returned to the top of the podium after a one-year absence, clearly establishing themselves as the team to beat in Idaho for the rest of the season.

Thunder Ridge racked up 196 points to finish 15 points ahead of Wasatch, Utah, last year’s champs. The Titans didn’t have any individual champs, instead using their depth to place seven on the podium, including a pair of runner-up finishers in Gracie Price (21-2) at 120 pounds and Shauna Anderson (15-1) at 190 pounds.

Eagle and Kuna stood as the top Treasure Valley teams, finishing in a tie for fifth at 121.5 points.

Nampa's Ryan Hirchert, top, and McQueen, Nevada's Cooper Sandoval, bottom, wrestle at the Rollie Lane Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026. Sandoval won 4-1 in a decision.

GONZAGA PREP TAKES BOYS TITLE

The Spokane private Catholic school finished 67th last year, but leapt to the top of the podium Saturday, recording 196.5 points to finish 45.5 points ahead of perennial Idaho power Meridian in second place.

Six Bullpups earned a spot on the podium. That included a pair of champions at 98 and 106 pounds in Miro Parr-Coffin (19-0) and Karver Peasley (27-2).

Only five Idaho teams cracked the top 10 of the boys team standings, showcasing the regional talent on display at the Idaho Center. That group included Meridian (second), Madison (third), Coeur d’Alene (seventh), American Falls (ninth) and Bishop Kelly (10th).

MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLERS

In addition to Bui’s and Noah’s awards, the following wrestlers were voted as the tournament’s best by coaches:

  • Girls heavyweight: Buhl junior Roxy Sheen (24-0) pinned four of the five opponents she faced for the to 155-pound title
  • Boys lightweight: Madison junior Brand’n Edstrom (13-0) squeaked out a pair of one-point victories en route to the 120-pound championship, including a 7-6 decision to hand South Fremont’s Greysen Packer his first high school loss.
  • Boys middleweight: Canyon Ridge senior Sean Hall (23-0) rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the 150-pound finals for a 16-6 major decision to win this award for a second straight year.
  • Boys heavyweight: Coeur d’Alene junior Brock Armstrong scored a tech fall in four of six matches en route to the 190-pound crown.
