Idaho state swim meet: Boise-area schools sweep 6A titles, set new records

Treasure Valley swimmers cleaned up at the Idaho high school state meet Saturday, sweeping the 6A team trophies and bringing home a haul of gold medals.

Five all-time state meet records fell at the Idaho Central Aquatic Center — a first-year host — as Bishop Kelly dominated the 6A girls team race and Owyhee pulled out a last-minute victory for the 6A boys team title.

Below were the top highlights from championship Saturday.

BISHOP KELLY GIRLS CRUISE TO 6A TITLE

The Knights dominated the girls meet Saturday for the second straight year, setting three all-time state meet records to rack up 295 points and finish a whopping 77.5 points ahead of Lake City in second place.

Bishop Kelly won eight of the 11 events contested at the state meet, including two out of three in the all-important relays.

“We petitioned up to swim in 6A. We want to swim against the best, and to go back-to-back speaks for itself,” Bishop Kelly coach Ryan Stratton said. “We’ve got a great senior leadership group. We’re going to miss them next year. But, man, we got a lot of rising stars that really carried the points for us today.”

Sophomores Sedona Stratton and Brayleigh Hoisington led the assault, both finishing atop the podium in all four events they competed in for the second straight year.

The duo led Bishop Kelly to records in the 200-yard medley relay at 1 minute, 46.21 seconds, and added another record as key members of the 400 freestyle relay. The later relay shattered the previous record as the Knights touched the wall in 3:30.66 — 4.27 seconds ahead of the pre-IHSAA record set by Boise in 2015.

Stratton set another new record by defending her title in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.43), and she added a repeat title in the 200 individual medley (2:03.28). Hoisington also repeated as the 100 backstroke (57.63) and 200 freestyle (1:51.69) champ.

“We’ve got some good freshmen,” Ryan Stratton said. “My sophomore class is just ridiculous. I’ve got six or seven girls there that will beat anybody any day they want to race.”

Senior Katelyn Giffen added a three-championship day for the Knights, winning the 100 butterfly (57.99) while swimming legs of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay. And sophomore Anna Beelaert added another individual title in the 500 freestyle (5:11.96) to her duties on the record-setting 200 medley relay.

OWYHEE HANGS ON FOR 6A BOYS TITLE

The Storm only brought seven swimmers to state. But those seven carried Owyhee to the top of the podium and knocked off a perennial power, earning the school its first state swim trophy of any kind.

The program’s first state title came down to the final event of the night, and only one scenario could lift Owyhee to the championship. Its 400 freestyle relay team needed to win the B relay, and Boise’s squad could not finish better than second in the A final.

But that’s exactly what happened, leaving Owyhee with 158 points and Boise with 156, ending the Brave’s run of 10 straight state championships.

“We just knew if Boise got second, we had it,” Owyhee coach Brooke Snyder said. “I still don’t think I believe it.

“... (It was) PR after PR after PR. And that’s really what we needed.”

Owyhee entered the state meet with few outside expectations. The Storm didn’t win their first state event until last fall, and they finished fourth at their own district meet a week ago.

But Owyhee’s top athlete, senior Braydon Fong, missed that meet with an illness. Assistant coach Toni Fonseca pointed to Colton Ramsey’s sacrifice, giving up one of his individual events to ensure Owyhee’s relays qualified for state. And Fond returned with a vengeance Saturday.

The senior finished first in all four events he entered. That includes individual victories in the 50 freestyle (20.79) and 100 freestyle (46.06), as well as a relay title in the 200 medley (1:38.15).

But his and Owyhee’s breakthrough event of the night came in the 200 freestyle relay as Fong, Tobi Davis, Jedidiah Davis and Kai Wilson combined to set a new all-time state meet record at 1:27.11.

“Missing him (at district) hurt,” Snyder said. “But that was the beginning of this. Because I feel like our kids really knew what they had in them at districts. And they knew once we had Braydon back, it could happen.”

Tobi Davis added a second-place medal in the 200 freestyle (1:44.85) and a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.82) to add 25 points to Owyhee’s team score. Jedidiah Davis also earned a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.01) and a sixth-place finish in the 200 individual medley for 22 more points as the Storm collected just enough points to end Boise’s dynasty.

“I wouldn’t say that we weren’t hoping for it,” Fonseca said. “But we’re just, like, shocked in a way. It’s pretty cool.”

SANDPOINT SWEEPS 5A TITLES AGAIN

The Bulldogs dominated the 5A meet, finishing atop the team standings in the boys and girls team races with comfortable margins for the second straight year.

The Sandpoint girls only won a single event, the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.8). But their depth put up 172.5 points to finish 19 points ahead of Idaho Falls.

The Sandpoint boys saw more individual success. Andrew Ford finished atop the podium in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.18), and the Bulldogs finished first in the relays for the 200 freestyle (1:30.35) and 400 freestyle (3:20.64). That helped Sandpoint earn 247 points, 82 ahead of second-place Idaho Falls.

No Treasure Valley team left the state meet with a team trophy. Columbia earned the region’s best team finish, taking fifth in the boys race with 115 points.

MORE BOISE-AREA STATE CHAMPS

  • Ridgevue sophomore Myah Singkhaophet cruised to her second straight state title in the 6A girls 50 freestyle, setting an all-time Idaho state meet record at 23.44 seconds to finish 1.36 seconds ahead of second place.
  • Mountain View sophomore Ace Garcia brought home a pair of individual titles for the Mavericks, defending his 6A boys 500 freestyle crown (4:41.66) and adding a title in the 200 freestyle (1:41.37).
  • Boise senior Sam Shuler capped his career ast the 6A boys 100 backstroke champ (51.60) after taking second last year.
  • Parma junior Rylan Holcom captured the school’s girls first state championship last fall. She added two more Saturday, repeating as the 5A girls 50 freestyle champ (25.15) and adding a gold medal in the 100 freestyle (55.31).
  • Cole Valley Christian sophomore Josie Fernald cruised in the 5A girls 200 freestyle at 2:00.64, finishing 4.44 seconds ahead of second place.
  • Cole Valley Christian sophomore Zeke Burgi broke through for his first state title, clocking a time of 1:45.16 in the 5A boys 200 freestyle.
