TIMBERLINE 2, OWYHEE 1: Sophomore Gracen Hildebrand walked off the pitch Friday afternoon holding a stuffed wolf.

It’s a passing trophy of sorts that Timberline awards to a special player after each game.

Hildebrand received the honor after scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal for the Wolves in the 51st minute in a semifinal win over the Storm at Rocky Mountain High School.

“That’s just the type of player she is, she just keeps working no matter what,” Timberline coach Maison O’Neill said. “She’ll create chances, and even if it doesn’t work the first time, she’s just gonna go at them again.”

Top-seeded Timberline (15-1-4) advances to the state championship match for the first time since 2008, where it will face No. 2 seed and defending champion Rocky Mountain (15-2-3) at 3 p.m. Saturday on the Grizzlies’ home field. The two teams have met just once this season, playing to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 9.

“Since I’ve been on the team, we’ve lost in the semifinals the past three years,” Timberline senior captain Maura Walters said. “I think it’s fun my senior year to finally win a semifinal game.”

Before Friday’s semifinal, senior Morgan Woods and junior Maya Atkinson approached their coach about trying a new play on a corner kick. O’Neill didn’t hesitate to give them the green light, and it paid off early for the Wolves.

Atkinson took a corner just three minutes into the game and passed it off to Woods, who dribbled once and then booted it back to Atkinson about 15 yards out from the goal. Atkinson delivered a cross toward the left side of the goal, and the ball careened off an Owyhee defender’s chest and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Timberline lead.

Hildebrand’s second-half goal courtesy of an assist from sophomore Allee Haynes then put the Wolves up 2-0.

But Owyhee made it interesting when junior Aydrie Webb scored in the 62nd minute. Webb’s initial attempt was stifled by the Timberline defense, but she corralled the rebound and slipped it past the keeper just inside the right post.

Owyhee (14-5-1) now will play Boise (13-3-3) for the third-place trophy at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Rocky.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN 1, BOISE 1 (ROCKY 4-3 PKs): Given what happened in last year’s state championship match, it seemed only fitting that the rematch for a spot in the 2025 final came down to a shootout.

Rocky Mountain beat Boise 5-4 on penalty kicks in the 2024 state title match, and Friday’s semifinal showdown was another agonizing affair for both squads.

“I don’t think anybody likes it, honestly, because somebody’s gonna lose and somebody’s gonna win,” Rocky Mountain coach Eric Simmonsen said. “And it’s not always the person that played well in the game or whatever. As they say, soccer’s not a fair sport, right?”

Rocky Mountain and Boise each scored one goal in the second half of regulation.

The Grizzlies struck first in the 49th minute, as senior forward Campbell Wilson darted down the right sideline with the ball, crashed in toward the goal and placed it right at the feet of freshman forward Reagan Hom, who tapped in a left-footed shot for the 1-0 lead.

Boise scored the equalizer in the 58th when sophomore forward Josie Reedy lofted a pass from senior Grace Hatch just over the outstretched arms of Rocky keeper Emily Wendt.

The score remained knotted at 1-1 through two 10-minute overtimes, forcing the shootout.

“I feel very confident (in a shootout), because we always practice them at the end of practice, just in case we get into these scenarios,” Wilson said. “It’s just like the biggest moment, like of the game of your life.

“So when you walk up there with confidence, it’s gonna go in the back of the net, and then as soon as it hits that net, I let my emotions out and kind of just let it all out.”

Wilson, junior Olivia Mullen, junior Dilynn Revelle and sophomore Teagan Weigt each made PKs for Rocky in the shootout.

The Grizzlies now turn their attention to a second straight championship, but they’ll have to go through a defensive-minded Timberline they played to a 1-1 tie in early September.

“I think it’s going to be a great game,” Rocky Mountain senior Maddie Jakobson said. “Timberline has a really solid defense and a good goalkeeper, so I think it’s going to be a battle. It’s just going to be the team that wants it more and lets it all out on the field.”

MOUNTAIN VIEW 9, RIGBY 0: The Mavericks rebounded from an opening-round loss in a big way, dominating the Trojans in an elimination game Friday at Rocky Mountain High.
