TIMBERLINE 3, RIGBY 0: There are games when Timberline junior goalkeeper Lexie Salisbury hardly touches the soccer ball.
Thursday was one of those days.
The top-seeded Wolves’ defense suffocated No. 8 Rigby, holding the Trojans without a single shot in a first-round victory at Rocky Mountain High School.
“We’ve had a very defensive season and haven’t had a lot of chances on us,” Timberline junior center back Reese Vachek said. “But (Lexie) has always been locked in. So if we do get counter-attacked, she’s ready for it.”
Timberline (14-1-4) has allowed just seven goals this season while scoring 69, and the Wolves dominated possession again against Rigby (4-14-3).
“Our team has been strong defensively all season, and I think that was our goal today was really to just have a clean game again so we could get lots of players on the field,” Timberline coach Maison O’Neill said. “Our defense helped us take care of business.”
With the defensive pressure cranked up, the Wolves initially broke through offensively in the 13th minute. Junior midfielder Maya Atkinson scored unassisted, curling a cross ball from the left side of the field into the top right corner of the net.
Vachek made it a 2-0 advantage on a set piece in the 22nd, heading in a corner kick from Atkinson.
“When we showed up today, we came in with high energy, high intensity,” Atkinson said. “We came in with good vibes today, and I just felt like we were gonna win. There was no time that I was like, ‘Oh, we’re gonna lose.’”
Sophomore Allee Haynes extended Timberline’s lead to 3-0 in the 62nd minute courtesy of an assist from fellow sophomore Gracen Hildebrand.
The Wolves now draw No. 5 Owyhee — a team they played to a 0-0 tie on Oct. 7 — in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday at Rocky.
“We’ve been saying our goal this season is to go all the way and win state,” Atkinson said. “Now we’re a step closer to winning.”
OWYHEE 3, MOUNTAIN VIEW 1: A single goal proved the difference the last time the No. 5 Storm and No. 4 Mavericks met during the regular season, on Oct. 1. So Owyhee coach Madison Graham wanted her team to come out with fire.
It didn’t take long for the Storm (14-4-1) to strike, scoring two goals in the first 11 minutes to spearhead a win over Mountain View (13-4-3) in the first round Thursday at Rocky Mountain.
“We know state is a different level, and we didn’t want to mess around and be waiting and going into PKs,” Owyhee junior outside back Lauren Chatterton said. “We wanted to make sure to come out in the first game, make our mark and show that we’re not here just to play, we’re here to win.”
Chatterton helped set up Owyhee’s first goal, assisting junior Paisley Pack in the 10th minute. A minute later, the Storm went up 2-0 when junior attacking midfielder Alexa Zierenberg connected with her left foot on the first of two goals, with an assist from junior Aydrie Webb.
“It’s kind of a relief. You don’t have to worry as much,” Zierenberg said of going up 2-0 early. “But then it also makes you like, ‘OK, let’s go. Let’s go get more.’”
Mountain View cut the deficit to 2-1 before halftime as senior forward Marisol Stosich fed senior forward Samantha Jones in stride for a goal in the 18th minute.
“We talked at halftime a lot about, like, the second half’s just gonna be all about heart and who wants it more,” Graham said. “It’s day one. You aren’t tired on day one. You’ve got to give it everything you’ve got.”
Zierenberg added an insurance goal in the 77th minute with the help of senior Sofia Lindsay to move Owyhee into the state semifinals for the third year in a row.
The Storm face No. 1 seed Timberline at 1 p.m. Friday at Rocky.
“I’m expecting a good Timberline team to come out,” Graham said. “They always play really hard. They’re fast and tough. But I think matchup-wise, I think we can come out and do something crazy.”
BOISE 2, HIGHLAND 1: The Brave (13-2-3) advanced to the semifinals for the eighth straight year with a hard-fought win.
Junior Elle Frazier gave Boise the first lead of the game, scoring past Highland goalie Makenzie Humphreys. The Rams quickly equalized with a goal from senior Devree Bell, keeping the score tied going into the second half.
But patience paid off for No. 3 seed Boise, which won a district title last week and got the winning goal in the second half from senior center back Emerson Shirley.
“We really try to transition quickly and get our attack high and fast while being patient,” Boise coach Ali Leonard said. “We knew that Highland was going to be a good team coming from out east, and we just stuck to what we’ve been practicing all season.”
The Brave will play No. 2 seed Rocky Mountain in the second semifinal Friday at 3 p.m. at Rocky Mountain High.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 4, EAGLE 0: The perennial powerhouse Grizzlies have been here before, and it shows.
In their return to the state pitch, the reigning champions wasted no time asserting a seasoned dominance over No. 7 seed and rival Eagle. Their key Thursday? An undeniable chemistry between strikers Campbell Wilson and Dilynn Revelle, who took turns netting each of the four goals.
Wilson, a senior and Boise State commit, put Rocky Mountain (14-2-3) up in the 16th minute after Revelle sailed a through-ball from the right flank that cut between the two Eagle center backs. Wilson surged onto the ball and tapped it over goalkeeper Campbell Reynolds, who came off her line a beat too late.
Revelle, a junior, scored three minutes later when a teammate’s cross went careening off her nose and into the back of the net.
“A goal’s a goal,” Revelle said after the game, laughing a little while saying it still counted as a header.
The Grizzlies held that 2-0 lead until late in the game, when Wilson and Revelle each had a breakaway goal in the final five minutes, after Eagles (10-9-3) was forced to play with 10 because top goal scorer Stella Jones’ second yellow card of the game sent her to the sideline.
“The momentum going into this game, it really showed on the field,” said Wilson, who has 37 goals on the season. “We worked so hard to get here, and it’s our home field. ... We just came together.”
The Grizzlies’ high-pressure attack and its backline, led by senior Maddie Jakobson, created a quiet afternoon for senior goalkeeper Emily Wendt, who didn’t need to make a save.
As it defends its state title, Rocky Mountain will play Boise in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. — the ninth time in 10 years the Grizzlies have reached this point. Eagle falls to the consolation bracket, where it will play Highland at 11 a.m. Friday at Rocky Mountain High.
