Idaho crowns its 6A golf state champs. Boise-area schools swept the team titles

Treasure Valley golfers cleaned up again at the 6A golf state tournaments this year, sweeping the team trophies for the eighth consecutive year.

Rocky Mountain established itself as the most dominant large-school girls program in state history, running away with its sixth straight title. But the boys trophy went to a newcomer as Mountain View broke through for the first title in program history — boys or girls.

Here’s how both brought home the coveted hardware Friday from RedHawk Golf Course in Nampa.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN GIRLS GOLF WIN 6TH STRAIGHT STATE TITLE

The word “normal” is normally reserved for humdrum, everyday occurrences. But it’s also the word Rocky Mountain coach Jonathan Gibbs used to describe his girls program’s sixth consecutive state championship.

The Grizzlies added to their title haul Friday, turning in the lowest round both days at RedHawk to shoot a combined score of 607 (+39), edge Coeur d’Alene by 19 strokes and enter the state record books.

The Rocky Mountain dynasty ties the runs made by the Eagle boys (2010-15) and the Twin Falls boys (2011-16) in the state’s largest two classifications. The only longer run of Idaho golf state championships belongs to the Homedale girls, who won seven straight from 1998 to 2004.

“It’s normal for these girls. They don’t know any different,” Rocky Mountain coach Jonathan Gibbs said. “My seniors this year, they’ve never lost. So that is normal for them. That’s a wonderful thing.

“When Rocky Mountain girls walk on the golf course, it’s kind of like Tiger Woods in his prime. Everyone knows they have to go and beat Tiger Woods to win a tournament. All the other girls teams know they have to go and beat Rocky Mountain.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Ella Wilson ran away with her second straight individual title, finishing the two-day tournament at 2-under 140 — six strokes ahead of Canyon Ridge’s Danika Humphries.

But the rest of the leaderboard featured loads of purple and black as Rocky Mountain took four of the top 10 spots. Maggie Urian finished third at 147 (+5) to record the fourth top-10 state finish of her career. Zoe Moore followed in fourth place at 149 (+7), while Natalie Nichenko placed fifth at 154 (+12) and Ellianna Hoopes took ninth at 157 (+15).

The Grizzlies returned all five players from last year’s state championship team, providing plenty of tournament experience.

“They’re pretty special,” Gibbs said. “They just keep working harder and harder. Last year, they got a little scared with Coeur d’Alene coming back and beating them the second day.

“They didn’t like that. So they went to work.”

Eagle’s Indie Taylor finished sixth at 155 (+13) to lead the Mustangs to a third-place team trophy with a combined score of 699 (+131). And Mountain View brought home fourth-place hardware at 701 (+133).

MOUNTAIN VIEW BOYS GOLF CAPTURE 1ST STATE TITLE

Mavericks coach Gary Larson contemplated retiring before the season. But Mountain View’s golfers convinced him to stay at least one more year to chase the program’s first state title.

“I told them you better hurry up,” Larson joked Friday. “I can see the finish line. I’ve got the rocking chair warmed up.”

The Mavericks delivered at RedHawk, shooting the lowest scores both days to finish the tournament with a combined score of 579 (+11) — 10 shots ahead of second-place Timberline.

Larson marveled at his team’s calm under pressure. The Mavericks entered Friday with the lead and a target on their back. But Mountain View never faltered and kept the field at bay.

“Those kids have been friends a long time, and they played the summer program, so they know everybody out here,” Larson said. “So it didn’t intimidate them.”

Mountain View placed four golfers inside the top 20. Junior Gavin Mlynarik led the charge, finishing second after falling on a playoff hole to Thunder Ridge’s Justin Anderson. But his two-day score of 138 (-4) from the No. 3 spot in the lineup set the tone.

Fellow junior Mason McGee also finished under par and took third at 140 (-2). Kaden Gempler finished 12th at 148 (+6), and Porter Bickford ended up in a tie for 16th at 153 (+11).

Anderson’s finish helped lead Thunder Ridge to a fourth-place team trophy. It also made him the first back-to-back boys state champ in Idaho’s top division since Boise’s Jesse Hibler (1995-96).

Anderson started the playoff hole narrowly avoiding disaster, landing his tee shot feet away from a bunker. But he chipped to within 5 feet of the hole and tapped in for par for the state title.

Timberline brought home the second-place team trophy thanks to a pair of sub-par rounds from Luke Drescher (-2) and Andy Metzler (-1). The duo finished fifth and sixth on the leaderboard.

Jack Bureau led Boise to a third-place finish in the team standings. He shot 145 (+3) to finish 10th overall.
