District track: 7 records fall in 6A. See who set them and who’s headed to state
The javelin throw first became part of the modern Olympics in 1908.
But more than a century later, Idaho teenagers are just starting to get the hang of it.
The javelin will be an official event at the state track and field championships next weekend, one year after the discipline was approved for competition at the high school level in the Gem State.
“It’s great that javelin’s in the state of Idaho,” Centennial javelin coach Cody Westbrook said. “It’s gonna open way more doors to all athletes that do track, because they can get noticed, not only doing hurdles or another event, but they can also throw, so it gives them more opportunity at the next level, wherever they choose to go.”
Centennial senior Eliana Ti’a will be heading to Washington State this fall on a volleyball scholarship, but she’s spent the spring track season trying something new.
With little more than a month of practice, Ti’a won the 6A District Three girls javelin title with a throw of 129 feet, 10 inches on Friday afternoon at Meridian High. It was a personal best by more than 13 feet and the No. 2 mark in the state this season.
“If I’m gonna be real, we had sprint workouts and I was just not feeling it,” Ti’a said. “So then head coach (Joel) Seagraves, he was just like, ‘You know what? You could be a really good javelin thrower.’
“So I went over to javelin. It was just one practice, so I didn’t think I would take it that seriously, and then I just kept showing up and started competing. Now I’m here.”
Ti’a has thrown the javelin in six meets this season, placing fifth with a toss of 77-2 in her first official meet March 28. She’s improved with each ensuing competition.
“I knew she was gonna have a big throw when I saw the look on her face,” Westbrook said. “She was gonna turn that javelin loose. And she timed it up perfectly and we all saw it fly.
“It’s just a credit to who she is as an athlete and as a person. She’s willing to learn. She picked up the javelin mid-season and she’s done wonders with it.”
Centennial finished 1-3 in the girls javelin, with freshman Jaylen Matsushita exceeding her previous best throw by nearly 8 feet (113-2).
Rocky Mountain sophomore Carter Gleave edged Capital’s Elliot Schrack by 3 inches (151-3 to 151-0) for the boys javelin title Thursday.
The two-day 6A District Three track and field championships wrapped up Friday night. Read all about the athletes who set meet records or launched to the top of the state rankings:
▪ Timberline’s Nick Janecko, Ethan Derderian, William Cox and Mason Pierce teamed up for a 7:50.32 in the boys 4x800 relay, setting a meet record and the No. 1 time in the state this season. The previous record of 7:51.74 was set by Boise last season.
▪ Rocky Mountain senior Paul Anderson won the pole vault by 1 foot over his nearest competitor, clearing a state-leading 16-0, which is also a personal best.
▪ Meridian senior Carver Martin soared to a season-best 23-5.75 to win the boys long jump title. It is the No. 1 mark in the state this season.
▪ Rocky Mountain’s Olivia Weatherford, Solana Lucas, Hallie Heemeyer and Emme Hamm clocked a state-leading 9:24.16 to win the girls 4x800 relay.
▪ Mountain View’s Talia Johnson, Taysia Johnson, Addie Lee and Quincy Keller already owned the state’s top time in the 4x200 relay this season, but the quartet improved on that time to win the district title in 1:41.00.
▪ Mountain View held off Kuna at the finish line by five-hundreths of a second, winning the boys 4x200 relay in a district meet record 1:26.17. The Mavericks’ Omar Osman, Behr Scott, Catcher Gennette and Jacob Allen bested the previous record of 1:26.89 by Boise from 2022.
▪ Meridian senior Hannah Bingham improved her PR by nearly one second, claiming the girls 400 in a state-leading 56.58.
▪ Capital junior Christine Huckins broke her own meet record in the girls 100, crossing the finish line in 11.67 in Thursday’s prelims. Her previous record was 11.74 from last season. But Huckins lost her only race in the event the past two seasons in Friday’s final as Mountain View junior Quincy Keller edged her 11.93 to 11.94. Huckins exacted revenge in the 200 final, beating Keller in a meet record time of 23.83.
▪ Huckins and Capital teammates Grace Russell, Veronika Russell and Eden Francis added another district meet record and state No. 1 later in the evening, winning the girls 4x100 relay in 46.95. Capital established the meet record last season of 47.46.
▪ Timberline sophomore Nadja Burkholder posted a 38-9 in the girls triple jump, the No. 1 mark in the state this season.
▪ Ridgevue’s Uluaifiu Tinoifili, Cash McKie, Tristin Veach and Caden Warren posted the fastest boys 4x100 relay time this season, winning the event in 41.93, just three-hundredths shy of tying the meet record.
▪ Eagle senior Makenzie Baisch swept the girls hurdle races, including recording a state-leading and personal-best time of 44.64 in the 300 hurdles, bettering her own time of 44.91 from last month.
▪ Nampa senior Tegon Lords surpassed the boys 300 hurdles meet record by more than 1 second, running away with a victory in 36.89. The previous record of 38.00 was held by Capital’s Sam Brixey from 2016.
▪ Entering the final event of the night, the Capital and Mountain View girls were tied with 90.5 points each. The Eagles pulled out the team championship with a win in the 4x400 relay. Huckins, Amelie Purcell, Alena Garrison and Cadence Mitchell won in a state-leading 3:53.76. Capital finished with 100.5 points, Rocky Mountain was second with 97.5 and Mountain View was third with 92.5.
▪ Kuna’s Izaki Abongela, Owen Waters, Izaiah Allen-Heinrich and Myles Johnson-Nicholson won the boys 4x400 relay in a district meet record 3:19.31. The previous record was 3:19.97 established by Boise in 2022.
▪ The Mountain View boys won the team championship with 117 points. Boise was second with 97 and Rocky Mountain was third with 87.75.
