EAGLE 8, OWYHEE 2: No team has touched the Storm all season — until now.

Eagle (16-5) spoiled Owyhee’s perfect record with a clear-cut victory in the 6A District Three Tournament semifinals, punching its 13th straight ticket to state and advancing to Thursday’s championship game against Timberline.

The Mustangs broke Owyhee’s aura of invincibility, tagging its state-leading pitching staff for eight runs on 12 hits. Meanwhile, junior pitcher Peyton Bargen shut down the state’s top offense, limiting Owyhee to a two-run home run from Grace Groulx in the bottom of the seventh.

“It really showed our grit, our drive and how we want to be here,” Bargen said. “We want to be here. We want to fight, and we want to win this whole thing.”

Eagle appeared to waste a golden opportunity to strike early against Owyhee (23-1). The Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first, and Eagle managed to plate only one run.

But the Mustangs were only getting warmed up. They did most of their damage off Owyhee ace Hailey Brennan, who has led all classifications in ERA the past two seasons and entered Tuesday with a sparkling 0.24 ERA this spring.

Eagle tagged the sophomore for seven earned runs on six hits in two innings. Makenzie Owens and Erin Thoresen each ripped an RBI double, and Bargen added a two-run double to lead the onslaught.

“We were working all season long on being able to adjust to different pitchers,” Eagle coach Nicole Rollins said. “So I was really impressed with the way each and every athlete adjusted to each pitcher that they threw (at) us.”

Bargen blanked Owyhee’s potent lineup through six innings, not allowing a runner past second base until Groulx’s home run in the bottom of the seventh.

She finished with her second win in as many days, holding the Storm to two runs on four hits while striking out four.

“I don’t think Peyton is anywhere near her ceiling yet,” Rollins said. “That kid is just such an athlete. On the field — defensively and offensively — she’s just a weapon.”

The loss drops Owyhee into the losers’ bracket, where the Storm face Rocky Mountain at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Borah. Owyhee needs to win one of its next three games to qualify for state.

TIMBERLINE 12, MOUNTAIN VIEW 2 (6 innings): The Wolves aren’t known for their power. But they’ve shown plenty of it so far in the district tournament.

Timberline (18-3) belted three home runs for the second straight day to secure their first trip to the district finals since 2011 and clinch their fourth state tournament berth in the past five years.

“This season, our goal was to go to state, go to districts, win districts and win state,” Timberline senior pitcher Delaney Wright said. “We have a ton of goals this season, and so far we’ve achieved them all.”

The Wolves finished the regular season ranked 11th out of 12 teams in the 6A SIC with 12 home runs. But freshman Brooklyn Reed cranked her first high school home run Tuesday, freshman Ivy Norskog hit her second, and Bella Pereira added her third of the season to power Timberline to its second straight mercy-rule victory at the tournament.

“That’s a very good pitcher that we hit,” Timberline coach Dave Craig said. “But those home runs from people that we’re not expecting them to come from is just a huge dugout lift.”

The power outburst proved more than enough for Wright in the pitcher’s circle as the Utah Tech signee silenced Mountain View’s bats through six innings. She finished the night giving up two runs on two hits while striking out nine.

Mountain View managed to send just two batted balls out of the infield, including Tayelynn Puyleart’s solo home run in the sixth inning.

“She is a spinner, and her work ethic is second to none,” Criag said. “She wasn’t given any of that. She is the hardest working kid you’ll ever see on and off the field, no doubt about it.”

Mountain View (14-6) drops into the losers’ bracket, where it will face host Capital at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The Mavericks will clinch a state tournament with a win in any of their next three games.
