Idaho state swim meet: Boise-area schools dominate 6A finals, sweeping the team titles
Treasure Valley schools left the Idaho state swim meets Saturday with a load of medals and trophies.
Boise athletes won 20 of the 22 events at the 6A state meet. And the Southern Idaho Conference swept the team championships, even earning a third one as two teams tied atop the boys standings.
These were the top highlights of the day.
BISHOP KELLY GIRLS DOMINATE IN 6A
The Knights chose to move up to the state’s largest classification this season. And Bishop Kelly proved it could hang with the state’s best, rolling to the 6A girls team championship with 249 points, 40 ahead of Lake City in second place.
Bishop Kelly captured first place in five of the eight individual events and two of the three relays to make a steady stream to the top of the podium.
“We want to race against the best,” Bishop Kelly coach Ryan Stratton said. “We kind of proved that we could win at 5A, and we wanted to race against the big kids and thought we had a chance to compete.”
Bishop Kelly didn’t just compete. It rewrote the state record books, setting four all-class records behind a loaded freshman class.
Freshman Sedona Stratton set two individual records with her times in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 3.85 seconds) and the 200 individual medley (2:03.85). She was also part of two record-setting relay teams in the 200 medley (1:46.50) and 400 freestyle (3:35.61).
Fellow freshman Brayleigh Hoisington also captured four gold medals, winning the 100 backstroke (57.90) and 200 freestyle (1:54.29) while swimming on BK’s championship relay teams. And freshman Anna Beelaert was the third freshman on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.
“My freshman class is truly unbelievable,” Stratton said. “Brayleigh Hoisington, Sedona Stratton, Madeline Weak, Anna Beelaert — I could keep going. They are just four tremendous girls.”
Senior Lucy Penna added three more gold medals, serving as the lone senior on both relay teams and capturing the 500 freestyle crown (5:10.04) for the second time in her career. Saturday’s haul wrapped up her high school career with eight total state championships.
BOISE, MOUNTAIN VIEW TIE FOR 6A BOYS TITLE
A dynasty won its 10th straight state title and an upstart program captured its first championship as the 6A boys teams standings ended with a tie for first place.
Boise and Mountain View both racked up 162 points Saturday, leaving them to share the team title with no tiebreakers available. But the two schools took different paths to the trophy.
Boise finished atop the podium in five events, including two relays and three individual events. Senior Jaspue Shue led the onslaught with four gold medals, including an all-class record in the 100 freestyle (46.09). He also won an individual title in the 50 freestyle (21.02) and swam legs of Boise’s winning 200 medley (1:38.87) and 400 freestyle relays (3:15.01).
“He’s been focusing on every possible thing he can,” Boise coach Craig Quarterman said. “Every little detail in those races is crucial. He spends the time and works on those pretty diligently.”
Boise also swept the top two spots in the 100 backstroke with Tyler Young (52.38) and Sam Shuler (53.48). But the Brave entered the final event of the day trailing by eight points.
Boise captured the maximum 32 points with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay only to see Mountain View rally to take third, earning 24 points to finish with the tie.
The Mavericks left with only one state champion in freshman Ace Garcia, who won the 500 freestyle (4:46.71). But Mountain View racked up nine medalists and qualified 15 individuals and relay teams for the finals, using its depth to slowly but surely add to their point total.
“It’s huge for us,” Mountain View coach Maddie Rice said. “I’m a former Mountain View simmer, so this is just really super special for me. One of my assistants, Grace Mitchell, she’s also a former Mountain View swimmer. So we recognize after being in this program for 10-plus years how big this is for us.”
Garcia added a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:46.91), and Jacek Brown got silver in the 100 butterfly (54.89). The two were also part of the Mavericks’ second-place 200 medley relay team (1:40.01).
MERIDIAN’S HART SETS TWO RECORDS
Josh Hart started eyeing two all-class state records midway through the season. And he chased them both down Saturday.
The Meridian senior dominated the 6A boys 100 breaststroke race. He touched the wall in 55.01 seconds to beat the record he set a year ago and finish 5.81 seconds ahead of second place.
The 200 medley saw more drama, but his breaststroke powered him into the record books again.
Hart fell behind top-seeded Tyler Young from Boise after the butterfly and backstrokes. But he stormed back once the race turned to his specialty to make up the lost ground and set a new record at 1:54.27.
“That’s what always happens. I’ve got a little bit of tracking to do,” Hart said. “I was a little worried because on my turn I could see his feet. I was thinking, ‘Oh, man. It’s a lot I’m going to have to make up for.’
“But after that first pull-out, I made up more than I thought and I could just see him coming back.”
Hart said he’s spent 10 years working on his breaststroke, including five where it’s become his top weapon in the pool. The stroke left him as a three-time state champion and with two entries into the state records.
“I just kind of hope they stay for a little bit,” Hart said with a laugh.
SANDPOINT SWEEPS 5A TEAM TITLES
The Bulldogs didn’t win a single individual championship. But Sandpoint captured both the boys and girls team championships on the strength of their relay teams and depth.
The Sandpoint girls won the 200 freestyle (1:46.28) and 400 freestyle relays (3:51.00) to rack up 192 points, finishing 44 points ahead of Idaho Falls in second place.
The Sandpoint boys also finished first in the 200 medley (1:43.98) and 200 freestyle relays (1:31.19) to post 178 points, 29 ahead of Idaho Falls in second place.
Cole Valley Christian captured the only trophy for 5A Treasure Valley teams with their fourth-place finish in the girls standings with 124 points.
Senior Julia Hill led the Chargers’ effort with her first two state championships. She won the girls 200 freestyle (1:56.80) and the 500 freestyle (5:17.75). She also led Cole Valley Christian to second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:46.65) and 400 freestyle relays (3:53.81).
MORE LOCAL STATE CHAMPS
Ridgevue freshman Myah Singkhaophet made quite a debut at the state meet, setting an IHSAA-era record in the 6A girls 50 freestyle at 24.20 seconds.
Timberline senior Kathy Nie set an all-class record to repeat as the 6A 100 butterfly champ at 56.15 seconds. She would have also set an IHSAA-era record in the 50 freestyle if not for Singkhaophet.
Rocky Mountain senior Keegan Near broke through for the 6A girls title in the 100 freestyle in 53.76 seconds after taking second in the event each of the past two seasons.
The Timberline girls finished first in the 6A girls 200 freestyle relay (1:40.31). The relay team includes Kathy Nie, Kennedy Lunde, Kimberly Li and Gabriela Midgett.
Owyhee earned its first swim state title with their boys 200 freestyle relay team. Tobi Davis, Clark Marshall, Kai Wilson and Braydon Fong combined to touch the wall in 1:30.68.
Skyview senior Sadie Schaffer repeated as the 5A girls state champion in the 200 individual medley (2:09.64) and 100 freestyle (52.81). She set a state meet record in the 100 freestyle for the sixth state championship of her career.
Parma sophomore Rylan Holcomb captured the first state swimming title in her school’s history in the 50 freestyle (24.96) at the 5A girls meet.
Riverstone senior Vaughn Geffros spends the regular season competing for Timberline. But he represented his home school and became the Otters’ first state champ with his victory in the 5A boys 100 breaststroke (1:02.23).
