Idaho state swim meet: Boise delivers domination, Skyview-Bishop Kelly deliver drama

Boise swimmers Milo Shue and Tyler Quarterman were competing in their final high school event Saturday.

They made the most of it.

The seniors each claimed four first-place medals to help Boise continue its domination in the 5A boys state meet. The Brave won their eighth straight team championship with 375 points, well ahead of ahead of second-place Lake City, which had 264 points.

“It was good to see them go out with a bang,” Boise coach Jeff Erwin said, noting that his swimmers “were probably as dominant as they’ve ever been.”

Fans got to watch the state championships for the first time since 2019. The 2020 meet was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, so district times were used to crown state champions. Last year brought the return of the state meet, but fans were not allowed inside the swim center because of COVID-19.

“It was really nice to see everybody pack the building,” Shue said. “I feel like that’s one of the reasons that we were able to go so fast this year. Just seeing my family and friends all show up, especially after an absence for the past couple of years, definitely multiplied the effect.”

The fans at the 4A meet were treated to the most drama. Skyview’s girls won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to edge defending champion Bishop Kelly for the team title, 209 points to 208.

In the 5A girls competition, Lake City took the title over the Treasure Valley schools, with Timberline High finishing second.

The Boise boys won eight events in Friday’s 5A preliminaries, forecasting the kind of dominance fans would see Saturday. Brave swimmers won nine of the 11 events.

“Jeff pretty much just told us to do what we do,” Shue said. “He’s giving us that freedom. He doesn’t need to micromanage us because at the end of the day, he knows that we can get this done.”

Shue and Quarterman paired with Connor Pentzer and Ben Stucky to win the 200 medley relay (1:34.03). They teamed with Stucky and Jasper Shue to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:09.00).

Individually, Milo Shue won the 50 free (20.96) and 100 free (46.41), as he surpassed last year’s first-place medal count of three. Quarterman, who also finished last year with three medals, won the 200 free (1:43.26) and 100 backstroke (50.03).

Those two finished with 128 combined points.

“(Tyler and I) are training buddies and we train together every day,” Milo Shue said. “We wake up in the morning and he’s the first person I see and the last person I see before I go to bed. We both swim faster because of each other.”

Eight Brave swimmers won individual titles. Stucky won the 200 individual medley (1:55.68) and Blake Ediss won the 100 butterfly (52.63).

SKYVIEW GIRLS EDGE BISHOP KELLY IN 4A

Nicole Dumitrascu and Brianna Ruark won four first-place medals each, and they were part of the 400 freestyle relay team that secured the team title over BK, which was seeking its third straight championship.

Skyview swimmers won seven events, with five different Hawks grabbing a first-place medal.

Dumitrascu and Ruark set the tone in the opening event, swimming with Sadie Shaffer and Camille Tindall to win the 200 medley relay (1:49.96). The Knights finished in second at 1:54.16.

Dumitrașcu, who won the 100 backstroke as a freshman in 2021, kept her title with a time of 58.20. She also took first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.76), jumping up from a third-place finish last year.

Ruark added first-place medals in the 100 butterfly (56.04) and 500 freestyle (5:12.97). Those two teamed with Tindall and Gracie Huskey to claim the dramatic 400 free relay (3:43.30) at the end.

TIMBERLINE GIRLS FALL JUST SHORT

Ellie McFarland led Timberline with four first-place medals in the 5A girls meet, but the Wolves couldn’t catch Lake City, finishing second with 229 points. Lake City had 260 to claim its second straight championship.

But McFarland offered a state meet to remember. She won the 50 freestyle (25.27) after taking second last year and won the 100 freestyle (54.05) as well. She was part of the 200 medley relay (1:50.26) and 400 freestyle relay (3:39.21) teams that won.

“I’ve been working really hard,” McFarland said. “But honestly, I’m just trying to have fun, be with my team and really embrace it since it’s the last meet. And I think that’s what helped me out.”

Sophomore teammate Kathy Nie added a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.59).

MORE LOCAL STATE CHAMPIONS

• Boise senior Kayla Wieckowski won the 200 individual medley (2:10.31) and 500 freestyle (5:13.44), helping Boise claim the third-place team title.

• Bishop Kelly senior Gabriela Stanton claimed the 100 freestyle (54.18) and 200 freestyle (1:57.76), and joined Katelyn Giffen, Amelia Crawford and Lucy Pena in winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.78).

• Bishop Kelly junior Shae Stratton took the 200 individual medley (2:00.31) and won the 200 medley relay (1:42.17) with Daniel Ni, Cameron Schauer and Adam Hanson.
