Prep recap: Scrappy senior ‘does it all’ for first-place Mountain View volleyball team
Sierra Grizzle has a handful of offers to play libero at the next level.
Right now, she’s dominating opponents as an outside hitter for the Mountain View High volleyball team.
Grizzle pounded out 17 kills to lead Mountain View to a 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Owyhee on Thursday night and help the Mavericks remain unbeaten in 5A Southern Idaho Conference action.
Generously listed at 5-foot-8, Grizzle uses her jump-out-of-the-gym hops and high volleyball IQ to best taller opponents at the net. She’s the Mavericks’ go-to hitter, and her role became even more important with fellow seniors Abby Van Winkle and Elle Bickford both out with knee injuries.
“She is everything to the team. She does it all,” Mountain View coach Ryan Hofmann said. “I mean, she’s one of the best offensive attackers in the state. She is the best defensive player in the state, in my mind. ... There’s nothing that she can’t do.”
Mountain View finished second in the 5A SIC preseason coaches poll behind fellow unbeaten Eagle. Despite missing two starters, the team has held up to that billing so far, possibly setting up a winner-take-all match next month between the two squads.
“It’s exciting, but one team at a time,” Hofmann said. “We respect everybody. We’ll go out and play our game and if that’s the case when we play them, I’m sure it’ll be a show on the court.”
Grizzle committed a hitting error on the game’s opening point, but it was one of the few mistakes she made all night — and she never came out of the match. Fittingly, she also had a kill on match point.
“It’s so easy to set her,” Mountain View sophomore setter Tenesyn Frye said of Grizzle. “I can set her wherever I want and I know she’ll keep the ball in play. She’s scrappy. She’s an all-around player. She gets everything. She can hit and she can dig. She’s awesome.”
Grizzle declined to say what schools have offered her a scholarship, instead turning the focus back to her team.
“I love every girl on this team,” Grizzle said. “And we have a great student section that helps us get through stuff.”
