Idaho native Destiny Slocum returns to WNBA. She debuted with her new team Wednesday

Former Mountain View High standout Destiny Slocum made it back to the WNBA on Wednesday night, signing and playing 17 minutes with the Atlanta Dream.

Atlanta brought in one of the most decorated players in Idaho history on a hardship contract, which allows WNBA teams to temporarily add players to their roster when they fall below 10 active players.

How long she’ll remain with Atlanta is unclear. But she has ties with Atlanta coach Tanisha Wright, an assistant last season during Slocum’s rookie season in Las Vegas.

The guard scored four points, grabbed two rebounds and had two assists in a road loss to Connecticut on Wednesday. The 17 minutes were two minutes shy of her career high last season as a rookie.

The 14th overall pick in the 2021 draft, Slocum played 21 games with the Las Vegas Aces last season, averaging 1.0 points and 0.6 assists in 21 games. The Aces waived her April 8 before the start of the 2022 season.

Slocum, 24, spent the offseason overseas playing in Turkey and France. She scored 17.4 points per game and tallied 5.3 assists in Turkey. In France, she averaged 11.1 points and 2.2 assists before returning to the U.S. ahead of the WNBA season.

Slocum led Mountain View High to back-to-back 5A state titles in 2015 and 2016. She was twice named the all-class state player of the year, and the McDonald’s All-American finished her high school career with 2,281 points, 510 rebounds, 442 assists and 304 steals.
