Strike 3? Controversial call ends 5A baseball state semifinal. See it for yourself

A controversial call ended a 5A baseball state semifinal Friday night and left the losing team stunned.

Owyhee topped No. 1 Mountain View 2-1 after a called strike three killed the Mavericks’ rally in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded.

A ball would have led to a walk, tied the score and kept the bases loaded for Mountain View. But the home plate umpire ruled it a strike, securing first-year Owyhee a victory and a spot in the 5A state championship.

The Storm will face Rocky Mountain at 5 p.m. Saturday at Wolfe Field in Caldwell.

Owyhee pitcher Nick McDaniel said he didn’t think the pitch was a strike, but he also pointed to a called ball four against the previous batter he felt might have been missed.

“I kind of disagree with the call, but I guess we’ll take it,” McDaniel said. “... It was a makeup call, I think.”
