State track: Centennial’s Lowder uses borrowed equipment for record-setting pole vault
If the Rigby High School track team ends up short a pole vault pole, the Trojans will know where to look.
Centennial junior Eva Lowder turned the borrowed pole into a record-setting state championship Saturday morning at the 5A state track and field meet at Dona Larsen Park.
Lowder cleared 13 feet, 9 inches on her second attempt to win the girls pole vault, besting the record of 13-0 set the day before by Emmett’s Tatum Richards in 4A competition.
“It was so silent going down the runway,” Lowder said of her winning vault. “I heard the silence, but it was almost nice because I knew how focused everyone else was and how much they were hoping for it for me. As much as I was hoping for it myself, all that energy combined, that confidence really amped me up, because I knew that they believed in me.”
On the advice of her coach, Lowder switched from a 13-7 pole to a 14-foot pole, which she had to borrow from the Trojans. The move took courage and trust in the moment — and it paid off.
“I was bringing so much heat that we knew we had to go up higher, so that I wouldn’t just blow through it,” Lowder said. “I had to trust myself and I had to trust him and what he saw, because we can’t watch videos. And that’s all it was, was the confidence and knowing that I could do it. Then, you know, it just happens.”
Lowder’s vault of 13-9 is tied for the ninth-best in the nation this season. It also would have been good enough for a third-place finish at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month.
“She really is a talented athlete that brings a lot of energy onto the runway,” Centennial pole vault coach Damon Griffith said. “Her gymnastics background has really allowed her to control her body in the air and be able to push off the top of the pole. She’s an extremely coachable, hardworking young lady.”
Lowder easily cleared 13-9 and took three failed attempts at 14-0 before leaving the track to a standing ovation from fans in the north end of the stands. She also received a few pointers from Olympic pole vault gold medalist Stacy Dragila, who was among those in the stands watching.
“I trained with her a little bit over the summer,” Lowder said of Dragila. “... Her and Griffith, they’re fantastic coaches. He’s so analytical and he listens. Stacey, she’s the queen of pole vault. I really, really do love working with both of them. And I owe a lot of it to them, too.”
RECORD BREAKERS
▪ Boise’s Mason Lawyer, Liam Murray, Cooper Smith and Porter Coffield set a record in the 5A boys 4x200 with a time of 1 minute, 26.97 seconds. The previous overall state meet record was 1:27:29 by Mountain View in 2017. Lawyer, Coffield and Murray then won the 5A boys 4x400 (3:22.67) along with Tucker Briggs.
In the 5A boys 400, Murray ate up the staggered start before the first half of the race was even over, blazing to an overall meet record of 47.50. Eagle’s James Heckendorn had held the record, at 47.97, since 2013.
Lawyer finished with four gold medals, also winning the 5A boys 100 (10.46) and 200 (21.62).
“It was huge to me,” Lawyer said of winning four events. “That was one of my secret goals.”
Coffield made it three wins on the day, edging Meridian’s Caleb Woodland at the finish line of the 5A boys 300 hurdles (38.49).
▪ Skyline junior Claire Petersen earned a repeat in the 4A girls 100 and broke her own record in the process with a time of 12.03.
▪ Wearing neon yellow sunglasses, Skyline sophomore Nelah Roberts established a record for the second day in a row. On the heels of her record-setting 3,200, Roberts won the 4A girls 1,600 in 4:58.06. The previous class record was 5:00.18, set by Century’s Bethany McInturff in 2008.
▪ One of the oldest remaining overall boys records finally fell at the hands of Emmett senior Landon Helms. Helms claimed the 4A boys 110 hurdles in 13.69, smashing the 1985 record of 14.08 held by Capital’s Darrin Harris. Helms added a victory in the 300 hurdles (38.15). Paired with his wins in the long jump and pole vault on Friday, he finished the meet with four gold medals.
▪ A powerful kick took Twin Falls senior Daulton Monkress from third to first down the stretch in the 4A boys 400. Monkress set a class record with his time of 48.60. The previous record was 49.05 set by Ridgevue’s Kade Linder in 2017.
▪ Boise senior Logan Smith blasted off the starting line and never looked back in a dominant repeat win in the 5A girls 800 that resulted in an overall meet record. Smith clocked a 2:09.07, which ranks among the top 20 in the nation this season. Boise’s Maggie Liebich had held the previous record (2:11.26) since 2018.
“I knew exactly where I needed to work on my pace and put in the effort,” Smith said. “The nerves definitely helped today, and the atmosphere, and I was really happy I was just able to put it all together.”
Smith also teamed with Sophia Clark, Lydia Nance and Kunie Hirai in the final race of the day to win the 5A girls 4x400 relay (3:57.10). Smith, a Stanford soccer signee, leaves with three-first place finishes and a second place in the 200.
“My legs were definitely really tired, but that was the last track race that I will probably ever run,” Smith said. “... We all laid it out there and went for it.”
▪ Bishop Kelly’s Alex Sato, Cole Miller, Seth Knothe and James Onanubosi put their names in the record book in the 4A boys 4x100 relay with their time of 42.16, surpassing the old class record of 42.33 from Twin Falls in 2017. Onanubosi, a senior who has signed with Arizona, also scored a repeat in the 4A boys 100 (10.54) and added his first title in the 200 (21.96).
“We’ve been working on that (record) for a long time,” Onanubosi said. “At the district meet we ... had really bad handoffs, but we knew we could get it. I’m glad to leave high school with that state record and school record in the 4x100.”
Three teams repeat; Pocatello ends BK’s streak
Three team championships went to repeat winners, while the 4A girls competition saw the end of an era.
The Rocky Mountain boys won their sixth consecutive championship — and 10th in the last 11 years — at the 5A level with 105 points. Boise was second (92), Mountain View was third (72) and Meridian was fourth (62).
“This year we had a really great team and we just all came together and raced for each other and ran hard,” said Rocky Mountain junior Tyler Sainsbury, who won the 5A 1,600 (4:14.60).
The Boise girls made it back-to-back 5A titles with 121 points to runner-up Timberline’s 90 despite missing one of their top runners. Defending 3,200 and 1,600 champ Sammy Smith was unable to run as she recovers from an injury she sustained playing soccer.
“We missed her so much and it was definitely a huge hole to fill,” said Logan Smith, Sammy’s older sister. “But everyone really rallied and we worked extra hard this year and it still worked out.”
The Bishop Kelly boys repeated as 4A state champs with 132 points, nearly doubling up second-place Blackfoot’s total of 67. It was the Knights’ fifth title in the last six years.
“We knew we had it in the bag at the beginning of the season,” Onanubosi said. “But we still had to execute.”
Meanwhile, the Bishop Kelly girls saw their run of six straight 4A championships come to an end. Pocatello won its first title since 1996 with 84 points. Skyline was second (68), Ridgevue was third (63), Twin Falls was fourth (55) and BK was fifth (52).
Below are additional highlights from Saturday’s competition:
- A pair of Treasure Valley athletes took the top spot on the podium in the 4A triple jump. Middleton senior Cassidy Fried won the girls title with a distance of 35-9, while Bishop Kelly junior Cole Miller repeated as the boys champ with a mark of 45-11.
- The 5A shot put titles went to Mountain View’s Jackson Beck (55-6) on the boys side, and Capital’s Gracie Strickland (42-8) for the girls.
- A day after setting the class record in the shot put, Bishop Kelly senior Jacoba Luteyn made it a sweep of the throwing events with her victory in the 4A girls discus (144-0).
- When Bishop Kelly had trouble with a baton exchange while in the lead, Nampa’s 4x200 relay took full advantage. Trais Higgins, Jamen Kiehne, Tegon Lords and Josh Peterson crossed the finish line first in 1:29.19.
- After finishing ninth a year ago, Middleton sophomore Patxi Franks leapfrogged all the way to first in the 4A boys discus throw. He won the event with a personal-best distance of 161-05.
- Boise junior Seth Nelson established a personal best by clearing 16-0 to win the 5A boys pole vault by 1 foot over the nearest competition.
- Timberline won the 5A girls 4x200 relay as Avery Navest, Lauren McCall, Ella Boson and Brynn Celani clocked a 1:42.79. The quartet also teamed up for a victory in the 4x100 (48.39). McCall finished the meet with four gold medals after claiming individual wins in the 400 (56.0) and 300 hurdles (44.11).
- Bishop Kelly junior Patrick Monahan was the lone jumper to clear 6-4, winning the 4A boys high jump after an 11th-place finish in the event a year ago.
- Meridian senior Caleb Woodland moved up one spot on the podium from a year ago, winning the 5A boys 110 hurdles (14.44).
- Ridgevue junior Isis Villafane came from behind over the final 100 meters to win the 4A girls 400 in 56.13.
- Justin Charter, Kade Thompson, Isaac Thayer and Hunter Steacker secured the 5A boys 4x100 title for Rocky Mountain in 42.28.
