Idaho state golf: 5 individuals, 5 teams from Treasure Valley crowned champions

Rocky Mountain’s Lauren Parish set a 5A state tournament record with a two-day score of 136 to win the individual title and lead the Grizzlies to a repeat team championship at RedHawk Golf Course in Nampa on Tuesday.

Near-perfect conditions led to an assault on the record books at the Idaho high school state golf tournaments, which wrapped up Tuesday around the Treasure Valley.

Boise-area golfers defended their home courses, racking up a haul of individual and team state championships. Below are the top stories from the two-day tournaments.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN GIRLS REPEAT

Lauren Parish turned in the best two rounds of her life at Nampa’s RedHawk Golf Course, leading her to several milestones.

Her back-to-back rounds of 3-under 68 propelled her to the first individual title for a Rocky Mountain girl. It lifted the Grizzlies to back-to-back team titles. And her two-day score of 136 stands as the lowest in the history of the 5A girls state tournament.

“I knew coming into Rocky that I wanted to make history,” Parish said. “... That was amazing. And it’s gonna be cool to go back to school and tell my friends that I’m the only one to win state for Rocky.”

Parish credited her putting for the record-setting score. She said her putter often gets her in trouble. But instead it brought her 13 birdies and a state title this week.

“I haven’t been the best putter,” Parish said. “I don’t drop bombs that often, but this tournament I did. I dropped a lot more than I normally do.”

Parish said she shook as she lined up her final putt Tuesday. But sinking it set off her assembled teammates, who showered Parish with water to celebrate another team title. Rocky Mountain combined to shoot 611 (+43), finishing 42 strokes ahead of Boise.

All five Grizzlies finished inside the top 15: Emry Gibbs (fifth, 148), Josey Parish, Lauren’s twin sister (sixth, 156), Anna DaBell (13th, 171) and Jane Barry (15th, 174).

Rocky Mountain returned all but one golfer from last year’s state title team, so Grizzlies coach Jonathan Gibbs challenged his squad this year.

“To start the season, I told the girls we weren’t focused on winning. We were just going to focus on setting records and playing their best,” Gibbs said. “I’ve coached a lot of these girls from when they were real little. And it’s just fun to watch them progress and get better and get confidence in themselves.”

Borah’s Maddie Montoya finished three strokes back in second place at 139, a score that would have stood as the best in 5A history if not for Lauren Parish.

Eagle’s Brooke Patterson (third, 141), Boise’s Kelly Goulet (fourth, 146) and Gibbs rounded out the top five.

Eagle finished third in the team race at 685, and Mountain View brought home the fourth-place trophy at 706.

Boise’s Reid Piron shot a two-day score of 143 to lead the Brave to their first team state title since 1991 and to become the program’s first individual champ since 1996.

BOISE BOYS BACK ON TOP

Boise could hardly call itself a golf powerhouse for much of the past 30 years. Consider those days over.

The Brave rolled to their first boys state title since 1991 with a two-day score of 594 at RedHawk, finishing 20 shots ahead of Eagle.

Boise also finished first and second in the individual standings with freshman Reid Piron edging teammate Will Strong by a single stroke. Piron, who finished at 1-over 143, is the program’s first individual champ since 1996.

“It’s an honor,” Piron said. “It’s really exciting for Boise, and for me, and for the years to come. There’s just nowhere to go but up.”

Piron spent much of the past week kicking himself after shooting an 83 at the district tournament and finishing outside the top 10. But that round served as fuel, forcing him to spend extra time on the driving range and on the course at RedHawk to prepare for this week’s state tournament.

“He had one of his worst rounds,” Boise coach Jeff Ulrickson said. “Now, of course, I would donate a kidney to have one of his bad rounds, right? So he was really feeling that. It’s a testament to his mental toughness to come out here and just turn it around.

“We knew he had the game. Everybody knew he had the game. But it’s one thing to talk about it and say, ‘OK, you have the potential.’ And it’s another thing to come out in this venue, with this competition, and play the way he did.”

Boise’s Braden Anderson added a fifth-place finish at 150, giving the Brave three inside the top five to secure the team title. But Ulrickson deflected any credit for the program’s resurgence.

“To be honest with you, it’s one of the easiest coaching gigs I’ve ever had,” Ulrickson said. “The kids just work hard. They have a lot of time outside of our practice schedule, and they are just working their butts off in the offseason.

“... I wish I could take any of the credit. Because if there was credit, I would take it. But I can’t. It’s really the kids.”

Eagle (614), Coeur d’Alene (630) and Madison (632) claimed the remaining team trophies, finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.

4A STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

It took a sudden-death playoff hole, but the Bishop Kelly boys returned from Meridian’s Lakeview Golf Club with their first state title since 2017.

Bishop Kelly and Twin Falls finished 36 holes tied at 652 (+76). The state title was decided via a one-hole, 5-vs.-5 battle. The Bishop Kelly quintet of Nicholas Bischoff-Jones, Dallas Jackson, Ayden Dyson, Andrew Moodie and Henry Gale outputted Twin Falls to claim the title on No. 18.

“(Being wildly inconsistent) was our consistency,” Bishop Kelly coach Todd Loveland said. “We did really good in the beginning, struggled in the middle and then did better at the end.

“At the end it all averaged out, and we were able to shoot a good enough score to get to a playoff. Luck was on our side, and (the players) were able to do a good job on the final hole.”

Middleton rounded out the top three in the boys team race with the third-place trophy at 661. Curtis Seidel led the Vikings with a two-day score of 147 (+3), making him the first Middleton boy to win a state title since 1999, when the Vikings competed at the 3A level.

“It was a little nerve-racking coming up on (No. 18),” Seidel said. “I knew I was in the lead, but I didn’t know I had it. So I stayed confident all the way through 18, I made the putt and then I heard (that I won).”

Seidel started Tuesday in a tie for third place. But he climbed his way to the top with a 1-under round of 71, the only sub-par round over two days at Lakeview. He surpassed Nampa’s Bobby Kincaid and teammate Cade Dean, who shared the lead Monday and finished third and fourth, respectively.

Minico won the girls team championship with a two-day score of 701. Bishop Kelly finished in second, 10 shots back of the Spartans.

Minico’s Dallis Shockey won the girls individual title at 162. Bishop Kelly’s Margaret Smock finished in second at 165, with district champion Claire Hall of Vallivue finishing in fifth at 168.

3A STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Homedale senior Tea Uranga defended her first-day lead and finished with the individual girls title at Wilder’s River Bend Golf Course. She joins her brother, Daniel, who won an individual title in 2019. But she’s the first Homedale girl to finish atop the leaderboard since 1998.

Weiser junior Carter Williams took second in the boys medalist race for the second straight year. He finished two days at an even-par 144, two strokes behind Kimberly’s Toby Heider.

Kimberly swept the boys (649) and girls (701) team titles. The Homedale boys (682) and McCall-Donnelly girls (873) were the top local finishers, each winning the fourth-place trophy.

2A STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Challis senior Kelli Ann Strand continued to prove she’s one of the best Idaho has ever seen, firing a record-setting 15-under 129 at Kuna’s Falcon Crest Golf Club to run away with the individual girls title for the third straight year.

The Nebraska signee and reigning state amateur champ broke her own record for the lowest two-day score at an Idaho girls state tournament in any classification. She fired a 9-under 135 last year, and only the canceled 2020 season stopped her from becoming a four-time state champ.

In the boys race, Cole Valley Christian’s Parker Wallace topped North Star Charter’s Gavin Rodeghiero, the reigning state champ. Wallace shot an even par 72 Tuesday to finish at 3-over 147 to rally past Rodeghiero by a single stroke.

Cole Valley Christian swept the boys and girls team title for the third time in the past four contested tournaments. The Chargers’ girls shot 717, 59 strokes ahead of Grace. And Cole Valley’s boys finished at 639, 33 shots ahead of Sun Valley Community School.
