Capital High senior didn’t want to be a thrower. Now she’s a district champion
They are track and field events that don’t seem compatible, but Gracie Strickland makes it work in a way few others can.
She’s a rare breed of strength, speed and explosiveness, albeit somewhat reluctantly.
Strickland didn’t want to be a thrower. But it’s a good thing Capital coaches convinced her otherwise.
With a throw of 41 feet, 4.5 inches, Strickland won the girls shot put at the 5A District Three track and field championships Friday at Kuna High. The gold-medal performance comes on the heels of winning both the triple jump (36-0) and discus (127-9.5) on Thursday. She also ran the third leg on Capital’s 4x100-meter relay team.
“It is unique, but it’s not surprising,” said Capital coach Frank Rohm, a former Boise State coach. “Honestly, she’s very raw still in terms of her throwing technique and her experience and development. She’s got an enormous amount of upside.
“But the fact that she can triple jump, the fact that she can run on a 4x100 and be very competitive, speaks to the fact of what it takes to be an elite thrower, which is somebody who’s very explosive and has speed.”
Strickland began her track and field career wanting to be a sprinter and jumper.
“All my coaches were like, ‘Gracie, you’ve just gotta try the throws.’ I was like, ‘OK,’ just to get them off my back,” Strickland said. “So I did it my freshman year. I did one meet and then I qualified for districts. I was like, ‘I’m not going to be a thrower. I don’t want to be a thrower. Absolutely not.’ And then I made it to state freshman year after doing two track meets.”
Raw as she was, Strickland finished seventh in the shot put in the district meet as a freshman and took 10th at state. Before COVID-19 wiped out the 2020 season, she threw the shot put at one meet, but was still doing everything she could to show coaches she belonged in the sprints and jumps.
Then she won the state title in the shot put last spring.
“We had to make some agreements,” Capital head coach Bryan Stith said. “About halfway through her freshman year, I said, ‘OK, you’re an OK jumper.’ Because that’s what she wanted to do. She wanted to jump and sprint. And I said, but you’re gonna be a great thrower. So if you want to keep jumping, you have to start throwing, and so she agreed to throw the shot put. She wouldn’t throw the discus. And then as time passed by, she realized that she was good at it.”
Barely a year into taking the throwing events seriously, Strickland is now receiving interest from Division I track programs, an opportunity she might have laughed off a few years ago.
“I was always thinking about going to college, but it’s kind of changed my idea of where I might go,” Strickland said. “It opens up more possibilities.”
A few weeks ago, Strickland set Capital’s school record in the shot put with a mark of 42-10.5, which ranks first in the state this season. And her 36-0 triple jump at the district meet Thursday was a personal best. The diverse success is a creating some friendly competition among Capital coaches, who all want to see Strickland excel at their respective disciplines.
“The throws coaches have kind of been fighting with me about she’s best if she doesn’t jump,” Stith said. “But because of her personality, I don’t think she would do as well in the throws if I tell her she can’t jump. It’s part of what makes her who she is. She’s not just a thrower, she’s an athlete. She wants to prove to everyone she’s an athlete.”
Meet highlights
Note: Highlights are limited to athletes who posted state-leading marks or multiple individual event wins.
▪ Boise senior Liam Murray enjoyed a sizable lead in the boys 400 while establishing a state best in the process with his time of 47.79 seconds. Murray finished the meet with three golds after running legs on the Brave’s winning 4x200 (1:26.89) and 4x400 (3:19.97) relay teams. Both relay times were tops in the state this season.
▪ Fellow Boise senior Mason Lawyer joined Murray on those winning 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams and collected two individual wins with his sweep of the boys 100 (10.68) and 200 (21.45).
▪ Meridian senior Caleb Woodland mastered the hurdle races with victories in the boys 110 (14.52) and 300 (38.71).
▪ Rocky Mountain’s Justin Charter, Kade Thompson, Isaac Thayer and Hunter Steacker combined for a state-leading time in the boys 4x100 relay at 42.45.
▪ Mountain View senior Jackson Beck swept the boys shot put (56-6.5) and discus (161-10).
▪ Two-time defending state triple jump champion Eli Lawrence of Meridian dominated the competition in the boys long and triple jumps. The senior won the long jump (22-11.5) by more than a foot and the triple jump (48-4.25) by nearly 5 feet.
▪ Boise senior Logan Smith appears in good form to defend her state title in the girls 800 after running a state-leading time of 2:11.11 to win the event Friday. Smith collected four first-place finishes over the two-day meet, adding a victory in the 200 (25.81) and running legs on the Brave’s winning 4x400 (3:52.87) and 4x800 (9:22.68) relay teams, which also established state bests.
▪ Smith wasn’t the only Brave to win multiple individual events. Sophomore Allie Bruce ran to victory in the 1,600 (5:02.23) and 3,200 (10:55.22) and was part of Boise’s winning 4x800 relay.
▪ Boise had several runners who contributed heavily to its girls relay success: junior Lydia Nance (4x200, 4x400, 4x800), junior Sophia Clark (4x200, 4x400) and freshman Kunie Hirai (4x200, 4x400).
▪ Timberline’s Avery Navest, Lauren McCall, Ella Boson and Brynn Celani showcased their speed in the 4x100 relay, winning in a state-leading time of 49.06.
▪ Rocky Mountain won the boys team title with 138.5 points to runner-up Boise’s 111. Defending girls state team champion Boise collected the district championship with 172 points to second-place Timberline’s 103.
