Prep recap: Mountain View edges Rocky in title series opener; state berths up for grabs
BASEBALL
Mountain View 1, Rocky Mountain 0: Will Grizzle pitched a gem for Mountain View in the opening round of the 5A District Three Tournament championship series Tuesday at Mountain View High. Grizzle earned the complete-game shutout victory, limiting the Grizzlies to four hits while striking out 11 and walking just three. Brody Rasmussen led Mountain View with a 2-for-3 performance. Rocky Mountain distributed four hits between four different players. The Mavericks’ decisive run came on a ground out in the first inning by Coy Clements.
Timberline 2, Borah 1: Kailer Saunders pitched six innings and struck out seven to lead Timberline to a victory over Borah in the 5A District Three Tournament. The win assures the Wolves a spot at state. Saunders helped his own cause with a home run, and Junior Garcia went 2-for-3 for the Wolves. Six different players had one hit each for the Lions.
Owyhee 6, Skyview 0: The Storm will play at state in their inaugural season thanks to a victory over Skyview in the 5A District Three Tournament. Ryder Cutlip led the way, lasting 4.2 innings and limiting the Hawks to three hits while striking out seven in the shutout. Cutlip also went 2-for-3, including a double and an RBI. Five players in all knocked in one run each for the Storm.
Middleton 9, Ridgevue 0: Robert Orloski went the distance for Middleton in a shutout of Ridgevue in the 4A District Three Tournament semifinals to punch a ticket to state. Orloski allowed just one hit over seven innings while striking out 12. He also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Tyson Amlingmeier and Brett Armitage had two hits apiece. Izaiah Stewart-Kasper had the lone hit for the Warhawks.
Columbia 6, Bishop Kelly 4: Columbia plated two runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in a 4A District Three Tournament semifinal win that secures the Wildcats a state tournament berth. Cam Wirtz went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Mario DeLeon picked up the win with 6.2 innings of work and six strikeouts. DeLeon, Lewis Anderson and Hunter Christensen collected two hits each. BK plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
SOFTBALL
Bishop Kelly 4, Middleton 1: The defending state champions will return to state after a victory over Middleton in the 4A District Three Tournament semifinals. Kaysie Jolley started the scoring for the Knights with a solo home run in the first inning, and Ava Armuth was the only Knight with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with a double. Faith Nichols earned the win, limiting the Vikings to three hits and one run over seven innings.
Vallivue 12, Emmett 5: Vallivue is headed to state with a win over Emmett in the 4A District Three Tournament semifinals. Jaimee Cagle was 3-for-3 with a double, and Brooke Garman, Keelie Hancock and Keyten Erickson each had two hits for the Falcons, including a home run for Hancock. Britney Henderson earned the win, lasting seven innings while striking out nine without a walk.
New Plymouth 11, Melba 0: The Pilgrims grabbed a state berth with their shutout of Melba in the 2A District Three Tournament semifinals. Jewel Bell earned the complete-game win, limiting the Mustangs to one hit while striking out 12. Bella Barbee was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI, while Abi Robinson, Jane Gibson and Lexi Eager added two hits apiece for the Pilgrims. Kinzie Stradley had the Mustangs’ lone hit.
Nampa Christian 6, Cole Valley Christian 5: The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to advance to the 2A District Three Tournament championship game and earn a spot at state. No stats were reported for Nampa Christian. The Trojans face New Plymouth in the title game at 6 p.m. Thursday at Nampa Christian.
