Prep football recap: Skyview wins Nampa city title. Capital plays spoiler. Eagle rolls.
For the first time since 2013, high school football bragging rights were on the line in the city of Nampa. And Skyview left no room for debate.
The Hawks blanked Nampa 21-0 on Friday night, one week after a 41-6 rout of Columbia, to claim the title of undisputed city champion.
After a scoreless first quarter, quarterback Max Cutforth threw the first of three touchdown passes, this one a 10-yard toss to TerRyck Pennington with 11:23 remaining until halftime. Pennington finished with five receptions for 72 yards, helping shut the door on the Bulldogs with a 37-yard TD reception with 5:07 left in the game.
Cutforth went 18-for-29 passing for 213 yards and three TDs. He also threw a pair of interceptions, but the Bulldogs (0-2) failed to capitalize on the miscues. Ayden Martinez accounted for the Hawks’ other score, hauling in a 26-yard pass from Cutforth in the third quarter.
Atonio Fifta made an impact on both sides of the ball for Skyview (2-0), rushing for 72 yards on 15 carries and collecting a team-high nine tackles, including 1.5 sacks.
Friday’s game was stopped with 5:25 on the clock in the third quarter when an ambulance had to be called for an injured Nampa player. An update on the player’s status was not available at press time.
Nampa converted on just 3-of-14 third-down tries and only totaled 55 rushing yards. Quarterback Gabe Navarro was sacked four times and finished 15-for-37 passing for 172 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Joe Anguiano led the Nampa defense with a game-high 10 tackles.
Capital 49, Owyhee 22
Capital played the role of spoiler for Owyhee’s first home football game in school history.
Senior quarterback Max Clark dissected the Storm defense with efficiency, completing 24-of-25 pass attempts for 396 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. Receiver Avery Downey hauled in two of those TD passes and threw for a score on a double pass to Ethan Castillo. Kody Walk added two TD receptions, and Jacob Olson had one.
Owyhee (0-2) trailed 35-7 at halftime but did score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter after Capital had gone up 49-7. Quarterback Matt Irwin finished 22-for-31 for 228 yards and a touchdown.
Eagle 42, Kuna 7
Eagle improved to 2-0 with a victory over Kuna.
Running back Deagan Martinho led the way with 142 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, plus a two-point conversion. Quarterback Jack Benson passed for 94 yards and a TD and totaled 58 rushing yards on just three carries.
Eagle led 35-0 at halftime and kept Kuna out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
No stats were provided for Kuna (0-2).
Meridian 41, Centennial 0
The Warriors’ defense dominated, holding Centennial (1-1) to 84 yards of offense and forcing two turnovers.
Freshman Zeke Martinez shined in his first start, completing 10-of-14 passes for 180 yards and three TDs. He’s the younger brother of senior Malakai Martinez, who left last week’s game against Mountain View with an injury.
Kross Antonnacchi ran for 130 yards and a TD, and Marco del Rio added 97 yards and another score as Meridian (1-1) racked up 469 yards of offense.
Centennial stats were not reported.
Bishop Kelly 45, Borah 19
The Knights (1-1) jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a nonconference win over its neighbor despite five turnovers.
Senior running back Seth Knothe paved the way, running for 103 yards and two TDs on 23 carries. Cormic Mullin (three carries, 25 yards) also ran for two touchdowns. And quarterback Hadley Smith finished 12-of-17 for 153 yards and a TD as Bishop Kelly improved to 8-1 all-time vs. Borah.
Korbin McCarney led Borah (0-2), completing 17-of-28 passes for 258 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. Bradly Toth stood as his top receiver, hauling in eight passes for 141 yards and a score.
Timberline 48, Ridgevue 15
The Wolves jumped out to a 20-0 lead on Thursday and never looked back, rolling to 2-0 start to the season.
Timberline quarterback Wade Zenner finished 20-of-25 for 309 yards and two TDs through the air, and he added 69 yards and another score on the ground. Montana State commit Taylor Marcum then finished the game, turning 14 carries into 75 yards and three second-half TDs.
Timberline’s defense dominated throughout, racking up seven sacks and scoring a touchdown on Preston Sansoucie’s 27-yard return. Bowen Hickman tallied three sacks, and Lukas Rollenhagen and Carson Kelly each had two.
Skylar Mullen led Ridgevue (0-1) with 100 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and quarterback Cole McDonald went 9-of-16 for 120 yards and a TD.
Vallivue 22, Hillcrest 14
Vallivue trailed 14-0 in the first quarter before rallying for the comeback win.
Santi Diaz got Vallivue’s offense going with a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter followed by a two-point conversion from Gabe Childs.
The Falcons (1-1) went ahead 16-14 when Casey Cope hit Diaz with a 14-yard TD pass, and Cope topped off the comeback with a 48-yard rushing touchdown.
Cope totaled 130 yards on 25 carries and completed 6-of-16 pass attempts for 56 yards.
Minico 21, Middleton 13
Middleton led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter, but it was all Minico the rest of the way.
The Spartans took their first lead, 14-13, on a 3-yard run from Brevin Trenkle in the third quarter. Jafeth Bendale totaled 95 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown on 16 carries as Minico collected 233 yards on the ground and just 17 through the air.
Middleton (1-1) went up 7-0 on a 9-yard pass from Ky McClure to Tyler Medaris, and Thompson Goodfellow made it 13-0 Vikings on a 4-yard run. McClure completed 32-of-47 passes for 238 yards, but he was also intercepted three times.
Fruitland 47, Nampa Christian 18
Fruitland racked up 324 of its 435 total yards on the ground to secure a nonconference win over Nampa Christian.
Landon Cheney connected with receiver Simon de Jong on a pair of TD passes, and Dane Bradshaw paced the Trojans (1-1) on the ground with 122 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
No statistics were provided for Fruitland (2-0).
Homedale 54, Ontario (Ore.) 8
Homedale (2-0) put up 47 points in the first half in a rout of Ontario.
The Homedale defense stuffed Ontario on all nine of its third-down attempts and limited the Tigers to 87 total yards while racking up seven sacks.
Dual-threat quarterback Jaxon Dines punished the Tigers with 110 passing yards for three touchdowns, plus 133 rushing yards and two more scores. Rylan Binford contributed 90 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries, and Chase Cooper caught two TD receptions.
New Plymouth 24, Payette 16
The Pilgrims (2-0) rallied from a 10-0 deficit, using Bailey Hite’s 19-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left to break the tie in a matchup of Payette County neighbors.
Hite’s fourth-quarter dramatics highlighted a New Plymouth rushing attack that ran for 171 yards. Skyler Rodriguez led the way with 76 yards and a TD on 15 carries, Hite tallied 57 yards and Connor Hawker added 37 yards. Hawker also caught a 37-yard TD pass that put New Plymouth on the board in the second quarter.
Abe Rodriguez led Payette (0-2), finishing 18-of-27 for 168 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. The game was played at Payette despite its district closing the school until Sept. 13 due to a COVID-19 cluster.
Cole Valley Christian 16, Nyssa (Ore.) 0
Cole Valley Christian (2-0) kept Nyssa out of the end zone to remain unbeaten.
Chargers quarterback Carter Fortin had a hand in both touchdowns, running for a 3-yard score in the second quarter and completing a 28-yard toss to Ben Beglinger in the third.
The Cole Valley defense earned a safety by sacking Nyssa QB Landon McDowall in his own end zone. The Chargers totaled five sacks from five different players, including Sam Sherman, who racked up a team-best 10 tackles.
Notus 54, Council 12
Freshman Benny Guevara stepped in at quarterback for starter Kaeden Clemens, but Notus didn’t miss a beat.
Junior running back Carter Woodland mowed over the Council defense for 335 yards and five touchdowns on 21 carries. Elijah Martin (10 carries, 118 yards) and Tristan Aspiazu (5-93) also punished the Lumberjacks (0-1) on the ground, and Grayson Pylican added a touchdown on special teams and a rushing TD for the Pirates (2-0).
No stats were provided for Council.
Salmon River 60, Meadows Valley 0
Meadows Valley was fielding its first football team since 2010, but Salmon River didn’t give the Mountaineers a warm welcome.
The Savages (1-1) were up 46-0 at halftime and held Meadows Valley (0-1) to 76 total yards.
Quarterback Gabe Zavala had a hand in five of Salmon River’s eight touchdowns, throwing a 68-yard TD pass to Tyrus Swift, rushing for three scores and returning a 40-yard interception for a TD. Garret Shepherd added 160 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and also paced the defense with six tackles.
No stats were provided for Meadows Valley.
Horseshoe Bend 28, Wilder 20
Horseshoe Bend improved to 2-0 in this eight-man nonconference matchup.
Despite rarely leaving the field for Horseshoe Bend, Blayne Meyer never slowed down. The junior running back amassed 128 rushing yards and one touchdown, and he made eight tackles and two interceptions. Senior quarterback Colter Meyer threw for two touchdowns, and senior defensive lineman Keegan Smith added 13 total tackles, including three sacks.
