4A district track recap: Bishop Kelly sprinter dominates after a shoe cost him a title
James Onanubosi ties his track spikes a little tighter now after losing a shoe in an important race his freshman year.
The ill-timed shoe malfunction cost Bishop Kelly a 2019 relay district championship. But Onanubosi provided his opponents no such gift on Saturday.
The Bishop Kelly junior set 4A District Three meet records in sweeping the boys 100 and 200 meters, and he collected two more victories as part of the Knights’ 4x100 and medley relay teams. Onanubosi’s 40-point gold-medal haul paved the way for BK’s sixth consecutive district team championship with 219.5 points, more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Emmett (97.5) and third-place Middleton (84).
“It definitely felt good,” Onanubosi said. “I’ve been training a lot just for this moment, to get those good times in district. And hopefully even better times at state.”
Onanubosi established meet records in Friday’s prelims of the 100 (10.72 seconds) and 200 (21.80), but the 200 record didn’t stand because it was deemed wind-aided. The wind didn’t factor in Saturday, allowing Onanubosi to take his place in history with a winning time in the 200 finals of 21.93. He was the only runner to break the 11-second barrier in the 100 final, clocking a 10.76.
“He’s one of the hardest working kids in the weight room I’ve ever had,” Bishop Kelly coach Jeff Carpenter said. “He just deserves all he earns. I’m just so proud of his performance this weekend, and his leadership skills are growing by the day. We just love having him on the team.”
The BK boys finished first in 11 of the meet’s 18 events, including all four relay races. Four other Knights went home with a trio of gold medals: Cole Miller (long jump, high jump, 4x100), Kevin Corrigan (800, 4x400, medley), Noah Bornes (medley, 4x200, 4x400) and Luke Legarreta (medley, 4x200, 4x400).
The Bishop Kelly girls outdid their male counterparts by winning their ninth straight team title under Carpenter’s watch. The Knights enter next week’s state meet having won five team championships in a row.
“It’s a culture,” Carpenter said. “We work hard. We train hard together, and we’re a family. It takes a lot to start that culture and build it from scratch. But once you get it rolling, the seniors and juniors kind of teach the underclassmen how things are done.”
Despite an ailing left Achilles, Bishop Kelly senior Paige Tekippe won the girls 100 (12.74) and 200 meters (26.17) and the long jump (16-10). She added a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 35-0 on her only attempt. Tekippe’s older sister, Alyson, won three state titles in both 2019 and 2018 for the Knights.
“Track is a really big deal, at least in my family,” Paige Tekippe said. “In my eyes, the most important things during the springtime are track and school and getting the district title and hopefully state title.”
Bishop Kelly’s Jaiden Rodrigues, Brianna Hayhurst, Mallory Knell and Anna Schmautz teamed up to win both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, and junior Jacoba Luteyn took gold in the shot put with a toss of 39-7.
4A DISTRICT TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
▪ Emmett junior Landon Helms endured two surgeries on his left foot earlier this spring and was only cleared three weeks ago to begin pole vaulting again. Even if he felt rusty, he sure didn’t look it. Helms won the boys pole vault (15-0), 110 hurdles (14.62) and 300 hurdles (40.04) and took fourth in the long jump.
He bested his nearest competitor in the pole vault by 2 feet despite being well shy of his career-best vault of 16-10 set during indoor competition at the National Pole Vault Summit in January of 2020. His 110 hurdles time was just .02 seconds from tying the district meet record, and he picked up the long jump this season for the first time since the seventh grade.
“I’m definitely not conditioned very well,” Helms said. “But I always want to do my best. I never like to give a half effort.”
Helms is being courted by a host of Division I schools and is likely to become a decathlete at the collegiate level.
▪ Nampa senior Cassandra Vasquez swept the girls 1,600 and 3,200 meters in record fashion. She won the 3,200 in 11:00.89 Friday and clocked a 5:06.88 in the 1,600 on Saturday. Both of the previous meet records were set by Bishop Kelly’s Emily Nist in 2012.
▪ Emmett sophomore Tatum Richards took down a nearly 20-year-old meet record in the girls pole vault. Richards cleared 12-8 in the event to surpass the record of 12-7 set by Skyview’s Julene Bailey in 2002. Richards followed up her pole vault title with a victory in the 100 hurdles (16.55).
▪ Caldwell senior Cruz Flores used a powerful kick to overtake teammate Cyress Wilson for a victory in the boys 1,600. Wilson led the four-lap race for all but the final 20 meters. Flores secured the distance double with a win in the 3,200 on Friday.
▪ Columbia’s Sage Myers, Kaitlyn Lundergan, Shayna Williams and Adeline Wimer broke the girls 800 sprint medley relay record by less than two tenths of a second. The Wildcats crossed the finish line in 1:50.69. The previous record was 1:50.86.
