5A GIRLS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT

Timberline 2, Lake City 1 (2 OT): The Wolves qualified for state with a golden goal. And they scored another one Thursday to advance to the state semifinals.

Junior Hayden Wilsey scored the walk-off goal in the 95th minute. London Carter stole the ball from a Lake City defender off a goal kick. She fed Wilsey, who then beat a center back one-on-one with a run down the right side.

Wilsey snuck a shot past the goalkeeper and into the far-side netting to continue Timberline’s dramatic run.

Lake City continually played the ball out wide on goal kicks, so Timberline coach Ross Schultz said they planned a trap between halftime periods. The trap worked to perfection to set up the golden goal.

“If you don’t take a couple risks, you don’t get a reward,” Schultz said. “We took a couple risks and got a reward.”

The Wolves (9-3-0) advance to face Rocky Mountain at 3 p.m. Mountain Time on Friday in the semifinals at Lake City High.

Rocky Mountain 12, Madison 0: The two-time defending state champions started the tournament with a bang.
