Valley teams clean up at girls state wrestling meet, which doubled in its second year

Treasure Valley wrestlers brought back a load of hardware from Idaho’s second unofficial girls wrestling state championship Saturday, claiming eight individual champions and seven of the top eight places in the team race at Pocatello High School.

Columbia won the team championship with 116 points thanks to three individual champions and seven placers. Caldwell finished six points behind in second place with two champions and five placers.

Idaho does not sponsor a separate state tournament for its female wrestlers like many surrounding states. Instead, girls must compete against boys at the state level. Qualification for that tournament starts this week with district meets.

Pocatello started an unofficial state meet last season to reward the growing ranks of female wrestlers with an end-of-the-season tournament, complete with championship medals and state sweatshirts.

The meet saw 52 girls complete in nine weight classes last year. It nearly doubled this season to 103 girls in 12 weight classes.

Individual champions from the Treasure Valley include Columbia’s Payton Lanningham (148), Destiny Edgecomb (170) and Emily Rhodes (191). Jocelyn Bautista (100) and Marissa Jimenez (138) climbed the podium for Caldwell. Homedale sisters Savannah Turner (129) and Kaydince Turner (132) won their respective divisions. And Nampa’s Shekinah Talamantez claimed the 159-pound title.

Other high-placing teams from the Treasure Valley included Timberline (fourth), Homedale (fifth), Rocky Mountain (sixth), Payette (seventh) and Borah (eighth).
