Winners of the Treasure Valley athletes of the week (Jan. 21-27)

The winter high school sports season kicked into high gear at the end of January, and so did the Treasure Valley’s top athletes.

Caldwell senior Jalen Callender won the Idaho Statesman’s athlete of the week voting for Jan. 21-27, earning 49 percent of the 2,317 votes cast this week. Callender averaged 13.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks for the Cougars as they battle for district tournament seeding.

Meanwhile, Tri-Valley senior Orion Southwick made a late charge to win the boys basketball athlete of the week honor. He took home 55 percent of the 1,091 votes cast after averaging a double-double of 23.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last week.

The top wrestling honor goes to an accomplishment off the mat last week. Columbia senior Kekana Fouret committed to Utah Valley of the Big 12, allowing him to win 60 percent of the 2,029 votes cast.
