Treasure Valley runners dominated the state cross country meet Saturday at the Lewiston Orchards.

Four teams brought home state titles, and five individual runners crowned themselves the fastest in Idaho. But two three-peat state champions stole the show.

HALLADAY BOUNCES BACK

A bout of heat stroke cost Mountain View’s Lexy Halladay a district title last week as she collapsed three times in the final 30 meters before getting up and crawling across the finish line.

Halladay put that nightmare out of her mind Saturday and cruised to her third straight 5A girls state title, completing the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 8.8 seconds, 14.1 seconds ahead of Eagle’s Ashley LaJocies.

“That’s hard to overcome mentally,” Mountain View coach Tracy Harris said. “When something like that always happens to you, it’s always in the back of your mind.

“That’s the mark of a true champion. She wanted to win, and she did.”

The win gives the junior a state title in each of her first three seasons with the Mavericks. Only three other girls have won three consecutive state cross country titles in Idaho history, including one at the 5A level (Twin Falls’ Brenda Falash, 1975-77).

No Idaho girl has won four in a row.

Halladay said each title comes with a different memory. But this year’s championship features an unlikely comeback from a slew of injuries for the nationally ranked runner.

A stress reaction, a precursor to a stress fracture, in her hip caused her to start last spring’s track season on crutches. Then a stress fracture popped up in her shin, forcing her to take six weeks off over the summer.

That same shin has plagued her this fall with a new stress reaction. Then her body gave out at the district meet.

“People say, ‘Three state titles, is it getting old?’ But with last year and this year and with everything I’ve gone through, I’m super happy with it,” Halladay said.

Halladay planned to start the race taking it easy and hanging with the pack. She ran with Boise’s Maggie Liebich for the first 800 meters before she couldn’t help herself anymore, breaking out to a big lead and maintaining it.

“When she’s a 100 percent, no one is going to be with her,” Harris said. “That was the case today.”

BK’S RUSSELL ADDS ANOTHER TITLE

Idaho Falls’ Zach Erikson edged Bishop Kelly senior Nicholas Russell three times this season. But Russell put together his best race of the season to etch his name into the boys record book with his third individual state title at the 4A level.

Russell finished the course in 15:11.3, 3.9 seconds ahead of Erikson and he pulled away from the pack in the final sprint.

“He’s a fierce competitor,” Bishop Kelly coach Tom Shanahan said. “He’s always seems to bring his best effort at the big meets when it really matters the most.”

Only six other boys have won three consecutive individual titles at any level in Idaho history.

BORAH’S GREEN BREAKS THROUGH

Borah’s Nathan Green missed his freshman season with a broken growth plate in his left hip. But the sophomore made up for lost time Saturday, breaking the tape to win the 5A boys individual title at 15:10.1, 5 seconds clear of the field.

Green has won every race he’s entered this fall except for the Bob Firman Invitational. He looked like he would run down the leader in the homestretch of that prestigious race before his quad tightened and he finished third.

5A SIC SWEEPS TEAM TITLES

The Boise girls entered as the No. 6-ranked team in the country by DyeStat, and the Braves backed it up with their first state title since 2011.

Boise ran away with the title with 39 points to runner-up Eagle’s 64 as four runners finished inside the top 10. Liebich led the way in third place at 17:26.8. Rosina Machu finished fifth (17:49.7), Eve Jensen seventh (18:04.1) and Mikella Tobin 10th (18:16.7).

The Rocky Mountain boys extended their dynasty, edging Timberline 48-49 to win a third straight state title. Braden Heath paced the Grizzlies in sixth place (15:37.9) and Seth Kohler finished eighth (15:40.8).

BISHOP KELLY GIRLS BACK ON TOP

The Knights placed four runners inside the top 12 to edge Skyline 55-58 for their first girls state title since 2011.

Rebecca Bodine paced Bishop Kelly in fourth place at 18:49.3. Anna Ranieri finished eighth (18:58.9), Sara Anewalt took 10th (19:17.6) and Tatum Seastrand 12th (19:20.2).

It’s the second state title for Seastrand this fall. The Boise State soccer commit also led Bishop Kelly to the 4A girls soccer championship.

TWO LOCAL SMALL-SCHOOL CHAMPS

  • Fruitland freshman Emma Hillam made her debut at the state meet in style, besting the 3A girls field in 18:47.8. She finished 25.7 seconds ahead of second place.

  • Liberty Charter junior Caleb Hamblin finished as a dual 1A boys individual and team champion. His time of 15:34.9 led the Patriots to their second straight team title.
