Meridian’s Troy Merritt, a former Boise State golfer, secured his 2017-18 PGA Tour card Monday in the Web.com Tour Finals.
Merritt will begin the season Thursday in the Safeway Open in California as the No. 27 qualifier out of 50 players who advanced from the Web.com Tour or Web.com Tour Finals. Merritt finished 17th on the Web.com Tour Finals money list — tying for ninth in the Albertsons Boise Open, tying for sixth the next week and tying for 32nd in the finale.
Merritt will play the PGA Tour for the fifth straight season. He won the 2015 Quicken Loans National but finished 151st in the FedExCup standings this past season, which forced him to drop to the Web.com Tour Finals to solidify his status for the upcoming season.
Another former Boise State golfer, Graham DeLaet, also is in the field at the Safeway Open.
Chesson Hadley, who won this year’s Boise Open, finished No. 1 on the Web.com Tour and Web.com Tour Finals money lists to earn fully exempt status on the PGA Tour for the coming season. The former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year also gets to play in The Players Championship. He’s the first player in the five-year history of this format to top the Web.com’s regular-season and finals money lists.
Former Boise Open champions Martin Piller and Steve Wheatcroft also advanced to the PGA Tour.
