Idaho colleges roundup: Vandals men’s golf takes sixth at NCAA regional
The Vandals wound up one spot shy of a national tournament berth, finishing in sixth place with a team-total 864 (even-par) at the Kohler Regional at Blackwolf Run. Baylor (858) used a 14-under 274 final round Wednesday to overtake Idaho and tie for fourth place. Illinois won the event at 11-under 853. Daniel Sutton tied for fifth at 3-under 213, Ryan Porch (215) tied for 12th and Jacob Scarrow (216) tied for 21st.
COLLEGE OF IDAHO BASEBALL: The No. 5-seeded Coyotes were eliminated from the Opening Round of the NAIA National Championships with a 7-6 loss to William Carey (Miss.) in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Coyotes (39-22) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 6-6 but gave up the winning run in the top of the ninth. Earlier Wednesday, the C of I defeated No. 2 Madonna (Mich.) 11-8.
NORTHWEST NAZARENE TRACK & FIELD: Cole Hoberg (men’s high jump) and Payton Lewis (Nampa Christian High, men’s pole vault), Taylor Deskins (women’s 100 meters), Ellie Logan (women’s javelin) and Lexi Tubbs (women’s 100-meter hurdles) all earned West Region honors in their respective events.
NNU BASEBALL: Catcher Andrew Helmstadter and outfielder Ryan Johnson (Timberline High) were first-team picks on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region teams. Second baseman Tyler Davis was a second-team selection.
NNU MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders added four players for next season — incoming freshmen Olamilekan “Spider” Adetunji (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Samuel Roth (Silverton, Ore.), and junior college transfers Maurice Jones (Riverside, Calif.) and Jalen Shepard (Henderson, Nev.).
