Idaho colleges roundup: Mountain View triple jumper wins NAIA title

Eastern Oregon junior Eric England (Mountain View High) won the triple jump with a leap of 52 feet at the NAIA Indoor Championships on Saturday to lead the Mountaineers to an eighth-place finish.

England also was third in Friday’s long jump (24-0 1/4).

The College of Idaho women placed ninth in the team standings. Tiana Thomas (Middleton High; 600 meters, 1:34.76), Amy Pfaff (1,000, 2:54.69) and Lila Klopfenstein (Meridian High; 3,000, 9:59.87) finished third in individual events, then teamed with Nichole DeGrange (Mountain View High) to earn bronze in the distance medley relay (11:59.58) for the Yotes.

Ruth Lewinski (McCall-Donnelly High) was seventh in the women’s 3,000 (10:12.81), and Max Hampton (Eagle High) placed eighth in the men’s 3,000 (8:38.11) to also earn All-America honors.

C OF I SWIMMING: The women finished seventh, and the men 10th, at the NAIA Championships in Columbus, Ga. Maddy Kelly finished seventh in the women’s 100-yard freestyle (52.91 seconds), and Mckayla Stevens was eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:09.31) while anchoring the sixth-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:35.07).

C OF I BASEBALL: Mitch Skaggs (Capital High) scored on a two-out error in the eighth inning, and the Yotes (15-6, 3-3 NAIA West) handed No. 1 Lewis-Clark State (13-1, 5-1) its first loss of the season with a 3-2 victory in the second game of a NAIA West doubleheader in Caldwell. The Warriors took the first game 11-7.

BOISE STATE SOFTBALL: The Broncos (4-15) lost to Bradley 7-6 and beat Seattle 5-2 at the Husky Classic in Seattle. Teauna Hughes hit a three-run homer during a four-run seventh inning in BSU’s victory.

BSU MEN’S TENNIS: Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell advanced to the quarterfinals of the 128-team Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla, Calif., earning four of the Broncos’ eight victories among four pairs in the tournament.

BSU WOMEN’S TENNIS: The Broncos (4-4) lost to Portland 4-2 in Eugene, Ore.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE BASEBALL: The Crusaders (8-6, 3-1 GNAC) split with Saint Martin’s in Nampa, winning 17-7 and losing 7-2.

NNU SOFTBALL: The Crusaders (8-9, 2-2 GNAC) split with Western Washington in Bellingham, Wash., winning 3-1 and losing 6-2.

C OF I WOMEN’S TENNIS: The Yotes (3-3) lost to George Fox 6-3 in Tacoma, Wash.
