College of Idaho football hits the road for lone nonconference game

The NAIA Yotes look to bounce back from a season-opening home loss with an 8 p.m. MT contest Saturday at Willamette (0-1), an NCAA Division III school in Salem, Ore.

Turnovers plagued the College of Idaho last week against No. 25 Montana Western with sophomore quarterback Tyler Cox (Boise High) throwing three interceptions and receiver Cole Maupin losing a fumble.

But the Yotes’ defense turned in their best performance since the school reinstated the program in 2014, holding Montana Western to 234 total yards. The Yotes hadn’t held an opponent to fewer than 300 yards in the previous 22 games, and Nate Moore (Mountain View) led the team with 11 tackles in his first game at safety.

The game is the first for the Yotes against Willamette since 1997. Ex-Boise State coach Dan Hawkins led Willamette from 1993-97.
